"One god to rule over everyone? Do you think humanity will ever be happy being ruled? No. It's built on the same ground. The same broken system. A god who has control over everything. It ruined our world. That's the reason we are fractured, divided... between oppressors and oppressed. Even if he takes the throne, nothing will change. It'll simply be a new oppressor. There is only one way. Our way. Let Tiamat's power destroy the world. Then begin anew from the chaos! Truly free! There will be no concept of rule! And everyone, human and demon, will be free."
Yoko Hiromine is a character in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance.
Appearances[]
- Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance: Major Character, Human Race, Panagia Race (as a demon), Guest Party Member
Design[]
Yoko is a young woman who has short hair, gray eyes and wears her Saint Marina's Academy uniform. When her true nature is exposed, her eyes become red.
When assuming her true identity as a demon, she wears a more revealing version of Tao's armor colored in green and black. When fully armored, it becomes black and red.
Personality[]
Yoko is mostly practical and grounded when it comes to seeing the world and how society, humans and demons actually survive, showing a knowledgeable but pessimistic view of the world. An example is when she explains how cars were made to ease humanity on going to another location while also causing numerous negative effects for humanity as well, such as car accidents. She also does not like how the forces of Law act as they are the answer to solve all of life's problems. She does like it when people are determined enough to actually change their beliefs when they learn that some of their actions will not be enough to help others, such as when her talk with Tao helped convince her to save Sahori Itsukishima in a different way.
It is later revealed that Yoko bears an immense grudge against the God of Law for sealing her away 18 years prior to the start of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, and seeks vengeance by enacting world annihilation. While wanting her freedom and her vengeance against the God of Law, Yoko never wanted the protagonist or Tao in harm's way for the resurrection of Tiamat. Furthermore, unlike most others who awakened as goddesses who struggle to retain a moral perspective or value, Yoko is stated to have been retained them even after being awakened. This is reflected in-game by how her personality did not change much even after her true colors are exposed.
Profile[]
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance[]
"Awoke as a goddess when the Tokyo Conception took place, but was sealed in Shakan by the Creator, who did not want to give up His throne. Yoko Hiromine, whose power was unsealed by Lilith of the Qadištu, was restored to her goddess form. Those who have awakened as goddesses often struggle to retain mortal perspectives and values. Yoko, however, remains relatively human in her perspective due to her time in a normal human state while her powers were sealed."
According to Mastema, she was actually one of the creator goddesses who chose the next God to sit on the throne, only for the Creator to throw away that custom and seal her away 18 years ago. Driven by hatred against the Creator and Bethel, she now seeks vengeance and teams up with the Qadištu to enact utter world annihilation. A manifestation of her also appeared in the real world as one of Bethel's exorcists and approached the protagonist as a deal with the Qadištu. As a human, she is a student around the protagonist's age who attends Saint Marina's Academy. She has been considered a Saint due to her ability to use magic since she was young. Fearful and envious of her immense talent, her mentors repeatedly sent her on especially dangerous missions in hopes of her being killed, only for her to survive every time.
At the very beginning of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, the player is given the choice to experience either the Canon of Creation or the Canon of Vengeance, the latter of which features the story exclusive to Vengeance with Yoko (choosing the former locks the protagonist out of the new scenario for the rest of the game), while two unknown voices speak heavily against his decision. This frees Yoko into the material realm and sets the story to a very different path compared to the original.
She first meets Yuzuru Atsuta and the protagonist after they drop down to the tunnel that leads to Da'at, where she assists them in defeating Glasya-Labolas. She will then join as a guest party member. After Tao joins the party as well, she will often exchange skits with her at the end of most major encounters. In actuality, Yoko was spying on the protagonist for the Qadištu, who had set their eyes on the Nahobino, viewing him as the perfect sacrifice to resurrect Tiamat.
When the party reaches the Tokyo Government Building to deal with the Qadištu, Lilith reveals that Yoko is their spy and orders her to attack the Nahobino, although she relents and officially assists him in defeating them. However, when the protagonist is expelled from their realm, Lilith reminds her of what she actually is, causing her to recollect all of her memories and resume vengeance against the creator by destroying all of existence.
Shortly after, Mastema caught wind of her entering the Shakan with Abdiel pursuing her and enlists the protagonist in stopping her as the risk of breaching the Shakan is too massive to ignore. When the protagonist reaches her however, she already escaped into the Shakan itself and awakened her true power. Abdiel then tries to get rid of the protagonist for being a Nahobino, only to be thwarted and for him to safely return and report to Mastema. There, he enlists the protagonist in chasing her to the Empyrean and stop her from destroying the universe.
Upon reaching the Throne Room, the protagonist and Tao will be interrupted by Yoko, now reassuming her true identity as a creator goddess and wearing a suit of armor resembling a black colored version of Tao's armor. She persuades the protagonist into joining her instead. From this point on, the story greatly diverges.
In the "Law" route, the protagonist will reject the offer and stay by Tao's side. Disappointed, Yoko tells them that any world they create by this point will be as flawed and broken as the last, and the Qadištu were right. She then summons Tiamat to attack the party, only for the dragon goddess to be defeated once Aogami took advantage of her regeneration to reform himself and allow the Nahobino to slay her with one hit. Yoko tells the party that it is not over yet, and awaits on the other room where she sacrifices herself to summon Tehom, the living abyss.
During the post-credits, Tao and the protagonist revive Yoko alongside all other side characters.
In the "Chaos" route, however, the protagonist will show some hesitation before accepting her offer and join her side instead. Tao becomes disappointed by the decision, but Mastema interrupts and fights them in her place. From this point on, Tao will leave the party and Yoko will take her place. Mastema will take control of Tiamat to fight them, with the primordial goddess meeting the same fate as she did in the "Law" Route and Mastema expressing disbelief in her defeat. He will then wait on the next room where he will fight the party alone. Once the angel of hostility is defeated as well, the protagonist and Yoko return to the Throne Room where Goko and Tao express disbelief and leave the protagonist to challenge Lucifer for the destruction and rebirth of the world. The protagonist is then transported to the realm beyond heaven and earth by Yoko.
The protagonist manages to win against Lucifer and seemingly destroys the entirety of the multiverse, freeing it of the Mandala system and allowing it to start anew. However, it is revealed in subsequent playthroughs that only a single universe is destroyed and freed from the Mandala system.

Trivia[]
- Yoko does not have a direct conversation with any member of the Qadištu until the party's final encounter with them at the end of Shinjuku.
- After the fallout caused by the Vengeance-Chaos ending, Yoko can be seen reading volume 5 of the Man-yoshu, the same book the protagonist is reading during the prologue.
