Worms are many different distantly related animals that typically are limbless, terrestrial, flexible, and no eyes.
The people of northern Europe connected snakes (and so the dragons that were based on them) and worms in their physical shape, and so called the snakelike dragons worms as well. The name stuck even as dragons changed in appearance over time. So while the Lambton Worm is very serpent-like in shape and behavior, even the more conventional limbed dragon in Beowulf is called a Worm.
Many types of the worm dragon appear in English lore, and they have a number of abilities. They can be aquatic, fire-breathing, toxic gas-spewing, or even have poisonous stings. It's said some can even rejoin their bodies if they are cut in half.
