Varuna, occasionally mistranslated as Varna is a demon in the Shin Megami Tensei series. In the Digital Devil Saga series, he plays a larger role, serving as the Atma Avatar of the silent protagonist Serph.

History
In Vedic Religion, Varuna (Devanāgarī: वरुण; Sanskrit Transliteration — varuṇa) is the god of the sky waters, and celestial ocean. He was also considered to be a chief deity of law and the underworld. Being one of the most prominent Asura in the Rigveda, a sacred collection of Vedic Sanskrit hymns, Varuna is largely given dominion over all forms of the water element, especially oceans. Varuna appears in Megami Ibunroku Persona as a Persona of the Magician Arcana. In the English localization, Varuna was changed to Vora.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner
Varuna is the Atma Avatar of Serph in Digital Devil Saga. He comes with the Bufu ice spell mastered, along with the basic hunt node skill. Varna excels in ice affinity attacks but is weak against fire elemental attacks. However, players are allowed to customize his stats as they wish, leading to a well-balanced character.
Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2
Varuna retains as Serph's Atma Avatar in Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, along with his elemental affinities. However, a true, black Varuna is later shown to be the true Serph, Serph Sheffield's demonic form in the real word. Realizing that herself was only a mere tool for Serph Sheffield to attain godhood, Sera's power became outrage and hostile, transforming Serph Sheffield into a black Varuna -the reflection of his own heart. The transformed Serph Sheffield became outrage and hostile, devouring his colleagues, including the real Argilla and went into a killing spree before being killed himself.
Other Appearances
- In Persona 3, the Be Blue accessory shop sells a magic enhancement bracer named Varuna Bracers. It great heightens the user's Ice-based capabilities.
