Tschaggatta, sometimes known as Loycheckta or Roitschaggata, are Swiss spirits that haunt the Lotschental. It is said to appear on the Thursday of Fastnacht wearing a coat of goat fur and bearing a staff. Despite its ugly looks, it is said to ward off demons and cure any sickness. This is especially important, since in the region where it dwells, it is said that evil spirits cross the glacier during winter
During festivals the townspeople would wear cow or goat spirit masks that resemble the Tschaggatta's mask. These days the Tschaggatta will just shake someone, smacking their bum or throw snow all over them. Once upon a time though, the Tschaggatta were originally more malevolent and had a much nastier bag of tricks. Young women were smeared with soot and blood and young boys would be haunted by faces for hours after a parade.
