"Several decades after the great destruction... While cultivating the wilderness, fighting off packs of demons, and through countless deaths, humanity survived... but people were not strong enough to survive without someone or something to cling to or to rely on... The Mesian religion preached the advent of a savior, gathered together believers and built a city on the site of the old cathedral... The city came to be known as Tokyo Millennium."
Shin Megami Tensei II intro, Aeon Genesis English version.

Tokyo Millennium (東京ミレニアム, Tōkyō Mireniamu), also called Overworld by some residents of the Underworld, is the main setting who serves as stage for the events that develop in the plot of Shin Megami Tensei II. It was erected by the few groups of humans who managed to survive the calamity of the Great Destruction depicted in the first game, in the same site where once stood the Great Cathedral. It's construction was almost entirely supervised by the members of the Order of Messiah. It is divided in numerous districts, each with it's own functions and governor.

Appearances

Main Districts

As it was stated before, Tokyo Millennium is divided into several regions, each one with it's own duties and lesser areas. The main four are as follows:

Center

Valhalla

Arcadia

An seemingly perfect world, where there are no demons, luxurious houses and great trees fill the landscape, and all the ones who reside there are happy, interpersonal conflicts being all eradicated. It is under the control of Gimmel, who states that Arcadia was designed to be an archetype for the future Millennium Kingdom that the Center wants to establish: a world of everlasting peace under the watchful eye of God.

According to him, the project was a great success, till Aleph and Hiroko discover it's abominable true nature...

Holytown

Holytown was built in order to function as a religious center for Millennium. The original plan involved building a great church in it, followed by the citizens of the Center moving near it's grounds, where a residential area would be formed, and then people would be able to undergo church services. However, it was a colossal failure, as the majority of the populace felt more attracted to the ordinary pleasures promoted by Valhalla.

It suffered an attack by a King Frost and a Basilisk (who freezed the area and poisoned it's streets, respectively), but they were defeated by Aleph and Beth. It was also through the broadcasting of the Millennium News Network here that Zain could stage his coup.

Factory

The industrial center of Millennium. It is here where the commodities that the residents of the city need to survive are produced. A large excavation and mining project site can also be found here, along with the farming area, where geneticaly engineered copies of the demon Nandi, called "Demi-Nandi", are breeded for food.

The mining area was attacked by a devious Betelgeuse, while at the same time, and probably by the latter's influence, the Demi-Nandi started stampeding. Both of these occurrences where taken care of by Aleph and Beth's efforts.

Underworld

The place where demons and humans who are fugitives under the eyes of the Center, or are just fleeing from persecution on Millenium of any kind, lives. It is located, as it's name implies, in the subsoil, in the ruins of the original Tokyo, devastaded by the aftermaths of the Great Destruction. As Millenium, it's divided in a series of different areas, each corresponding to a japanese city that was destroyed by the war, and subsequent flood.

Shinjuku

It's main residents are the Yousei and the Chirei, as thus, goblins and faeries. They all live in harmony under the watchful vigilance of the fairy King Oberon, from his throne. In this area, there is also an abandoned wharehouse, filled with harmless traps set by Puck, one of the citzens in Oberon's kingdom, famous for his numerous pranks.

It's also here where Daleth sets for good after an incident with the Infidelity Sap (a magical potion that can make anyone fall deeply in love with the first person they see), where he start to develop feelings for a timid fairy named Anoon, the owner of a drug shop in the area.
