In Nihon Shoki, When Izanagi gives birth to Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi and Susano-o, he commands his three offsprings to govern different parts of the world. Amaterasu is assigned to the heaven (高天原, Takamagahara)?; Susano-o is given the netherworld or "world below the heaven" (天下, Tenka)?; and Tsukuyomi is to rule over the "far blue ocean as well as the tide" (滄海原の潮の八百重, Ao-unabara no Shio no Yaoe)?.
In Kojiki, Tsukuyomi is given the "land of night" (夜の食国, Yoru no Osukuni)?. The ocean (海原, Unabara)? is instead given to Susano-O.
