Steam is a video game digital distribution service for personal computers by Valve. It initially launched as a software client on September 12, 2003, as means for the developers to distribute automatic updates for their games, before expanding onto opening for third-party publishers, and into an online web-based and digital storefront. Steam is the largest digital platform on PC, as the user interface is available in 28 languages, as well as having support for Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux.
Although the service is innately designed for PC play, the Steam Deck, a portable console designed to run Steam games, went on sale on February 25, 2022.
Several old Atlus titles were ported on Steam starting from 2019, particularly the original Catherine and later Persona 4 Golden. As they were ported on an online client, they have received a simultaneous worldwide release. Persona 5 Strikers, although it first came out in Japan on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch only, is the first Atlus title to be simultaneously localized in the west and be ported on Steam, while Soul Hackers 2 is the first title to be published on Steam alongside its worldwide release.
Due to freedom of switching between different language versions of games on Steam, some entries in the series that allow for personalization via text, such as naming characters, are forced to default to certain names until switched back to the original version. Yu Narukami of Persona 4 Golden, as well as Ren Amamiya and The Phantoms of Persona 5 Royal, are prime examples of this.
