The protagonist can start Ai's Social Link as early as May 13th after reaching Rank 4 of the Strength Arcana Social Link (either Kou Ichijo or Daisuke Nagase). The protagonist must also activate a flag by talking to Ai after school, which can be done as early as April 27th. She can be found during the day on the first floor of Yasogami High. She requires rank 3 Courage (Brave).
Ai gives the protagonist a Compact once the Social Link is maxed, which enables the fusion of Sandalphon.
Ai's Social Link is one of the more complicated to max rank. Her Social Link scenarios have more opportunities to Reverse than any other character and is the only one that can be Broken. Also, to pursue her romance route, the protagonist must not agree to be her boyfriend in Rank 6. Otherwise, the relationship will become "intimate," but only temporarily and her actual romance will be locked out.

In Persona 4 Golden, starting on 4/19, the protagonist can sneak out at night when Ryotaro Dojima is not home and spend time with Social Links in the Central Shopping District. Since time is limited in the evening, the Social Link cannot advance. However, during the day, it can then be progressed to the next rank. The protagonist will also receive an item, which can differ depending on the progress of the Social Link.
