Skanda is one of the protectors of the Buddhist faith and dharma. He is often depicted with Chinese features and wearing a Chinese general's armor and carrying a vajra staff. In Chinese monasteries, he is often placed on the far right end of the main hall opposite his partner Sangharama. He is charged with protecting the Buddhist community from the tempter Mara.
According to Chinese tradition, Weituo (韋馱) was a general under Guan Yin's cruel father. Taking pity on Guan Yin, he helped her escape but both were caught and killed. Because of his devotion to Guan Yin, he was reincarnated as a bodhisattva and was charged with protecting Guan Yin. He is not to be confused with Kartikeya, who also bears the title Skanda.
