Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of the 20 regions of Italy. The Strait of Messina separates it from the region of Calabria in Southern Italy. Its capital city is Palermo. The name Sicilia was given to the Roman province in 241 BC. It is derived from the name of the Sikeloi, who inhabited the eastern part of the island. The ancient name of the island is Trinacria ("having three headlands") for its triangular shape, likely a re-interpretation of earlier Thrinacia.
