Shun Kano is a major playable character from Persona 5: The Phantom X.
Appearances[]
- Persona 5: The Phantom X: Playable Character
Design[]
Shun is a young man with short cobalt-blue hair and gray eyes. He wears a Kokatsu Academy school uniform, except his collar shirt is open which exposes his blue T-shirt with a black design, black belt and black leather lace boots.
His Metaverse outfit consists of a silver mask, a long black scarf, a blue form-fitting top with slim plate armor and black wrist warmers, cyan gloves, black cowboy pants and leather boots. In addition, he wears a black hat.
Personality[]
From the outset, Shun comes off as a bit of a loner, someone who likes his own company when eating lunch. He is shown to be rather awkward, intense and direct to the point of seeming stand-offish. However, this impression belies the fact that he is kind, sincere and talkative about his interests, but also a little bit shy, as shown by his demeanor after he befriends with the protagonist, Motoha Arai and Lufel.
His strongest traits are his passion and loyalty, and he shows a lot of deference and respect towards the adults who have supported him, namely Yamagoshi, Masa and Kumi Katayama. He views Yamagoshi as a father figure due to him feeding him and taking him under his wing. He also looks up to Masa, who taught him to be particular in keeping to the proper standards his master's flavorful broth while making Ramen. Meanwhile, he holds Katayama high regard due to her support when he was involved in a scandal, and her efforts to make sure he was protected from the fallout. His sense of loyalty extends to being fiercely protective of these people, and he will refuse to back down when it comes to protecting their honor and integrity, even at the cost of his own. This leads him to be rather reckless, and it is shown on multiple occasions that he is prone to acting out of emotion, before quickly regretting the outcomes. He also had a proclivity towards self-blame and self-sacrifice before he awakens his persona.
His passions lie mainly in food, especially ramen, and tie directly into his aspirations for the future. He shows an excellent sense of taste, strong analytical skills and abundant knowledge of food, ingredients, restaurant operations and the catering industry which allows him to tell the difference between flavors and deduce the reasons behind them. His intensity and earnestness lead him to be somewhat clumsy and awkward in some social situations. His passionate nature is so strong that Lufel immediately takes notice of it, and it allows him to understand Lufel in the real world, even before he awakens his Persona or stepped foot in the Metaverse.
Profile[]
Persona 5: The Phantom X[]
Shun is a second-year student at Kokatsu Acedemy. He is in Class 2-D, the same class as Tomoko Noge. Showing an unfriendly attitude, he doesn't seem to have any friends. Still, Shun behaves well in school and has Kumi Katayama willing to give him support. His parents divorced when he was a child, and his mother raises him on her own. However, due to her job as a nurse, she is often late coming home. One night, when his mother was working unexpectedly late, Shun had nothing to eat, and wandered out of his home, only to discover Asshouken. Seeing the young boy salivating over the smell of the food, the owner, Yamagoshi fed him. The kindness shown, as well as the flavor of the ramen would leave a strong impression on Shun. He would come to see Yamagoshi as a father figure, and eventually wanted to become Yamagoshi's apprentice, though he told to wait until he was in high school. As he waited until he was old enough, Shun learned to make ramen on his own time.
Once he entered high school, Shun began working part time under Yamagoshi. Under Yamagoshi's tutelage, Shun gained a refined palette and grew proficient at making ramen. When Miyazawa visited the restaurant and gave unreasonably harsh critique to the ramen they served, Shun lost his temper and splashed a cup of water in Miyazawa's face. The irritated Miyazawa left scathing reviews on Asshouken, which severely damaged the business' reputation, and the stress of the matter eventually made the already sickly Yamagoshi collapse. Eventually, Miyazawa offered to retract the comments and save the restaurant, but only in exchange for being handed control l of the restaurant, receiving money on a regular basis and letting Shun go. Therefore, Shun, blaming himself for Asshouken's downfall, had no choice but to leave the restaurant. With Miyazawa effectively in control of Asshouken, Yamagoshi would return to his original restaurant, Toraiken, while his protege Masa held up the fort in Asshouken. Shun's highschool teacher, Kumi Katayama supported Shun during this time, and through her efforts, the incident left no lasting impact on Shun's standing and school life.
Shun is often seen on the roof of the school, eating his lunch alone. When the protagonist, Motoha and Lufel go there to discuss matters, he is quick to excuse himself.
"Chapter 2: Battle of Dreams & Flavor"[]
Shun is first introduced when the Phantom Thieves go to Asshouken in Shinjuku. Motoha, who had recommended the restaurant is disappointed that flavor of the broth has changed since her last visit. Soon after, Shun, who is sitting at the next table over, gets up and questions Masa over the very same thing. Masa responds that he is not the one who made this decision, and states that he's unhappy about it too. Shun immediately apologizes profusely and takes his leave. Motoha recognizes him as Tomoko's classmate. After Motoha and the protagonist are forced to leave the restaurant, Shun approaches Motoha outside of Asshouken, wanting to discuss Asshouken's decline, but he quickly gets cold feet and leaves.
Later, while walking to school, Shun takes notice of the protagonist and Motoha, and seems confused over whether he heard two or three voices, suggesting that he is able to hear Lufel's voice. Later that day, he would approach the protagonist during gym class and asks about Motoha again, and reveals that he used to work at Asshouken. However he begins feeling awkward, and leaves once again.
Later, when Motoha contemplates giving Asshouken another shot, wondering if the other flavors are better, Shun notices them, and retorts that all the flavors are all similarly underwhelming, due to them changing their recipes and using cheaper ingredients, albeit against their will. Motoha and Shun get into a conversation over the apparent decline of the ramen shop's flavor, despite the public's belief on the contrary. Motoha shares her fond childhood memories of Asshouken's old recipe, which resonates with Shun, leading him to form a comradery with the group. As Shun shares his backstory with the others, Shun reveals his worries for Yamagoshi, as his health is worsening due the added stress from Miyazawa's influence.
After Miyazawa underhandedly manages to get Yamagoshi to transfer Toraiken to him after Yamagoshi falls ill, Shun grabs Miyazawa in a rage, though he relents due to fears of retaliation. Goading Shun, Miyazawa challenges Shun to try to win the restaurant back on a segment on his show called "Flavor Fight." If Shun can win Miyazawa over with his Asshouken ramen and get him to say "Thank you for the meal," he will hand over the restaurant and swear to leave Toraiken and Asshouken alone for good. Despite knowing that the challenge is rigged, Shun agrees to it, feeling that it would be better for him to become shamed in place of Yamagoshi and his associates.
After failing to persuade Shun to back down from the challenge, the protagonist sees another vision, this time about Shun losing the challenge and decrying Miyazawa for throwing away "the life of Asshouken." Shun is labeled as the next certified "Phantom," and Yamagoshi dies from a sudden heart attack. Back in reality, Lufel notices the protagonist's expression and infers that he's seen another vision, and implores the protagonist to act if he has any solutions to their current predicament. The protagonist then decides to call Yamagoshi for advice, specifically asking about "the life of Asshouken." Yamagoshi explains that the item described is actually specialty mandolin or shaver box used to shave katsuobushi to make dashi for ramen, pivotal to making Asshouken's signature broth, but speculates that Miyazawa had likely thrown all those tools away when he forced Asshouken to switch to cheaper ingredients. However, he then remembers that he had set aside a shaver box for Shun, and had left it at Asshouken's private safe for safe keeping. He asks the protagonist and Motoha aid Shun and tell him about the shaver box.
Meanwhile, Shun is left scrambling due to the lack of the shaver box. The protagonist and Motoha arrive just in time to tell Shun about Yamagoshi's gift. With it, Shun manages to recreate his master's ramen so well that Miyazawa cannot help finishing the whole bowl of ramen and earnest saying "Thanks for the meal" out of habit. However, he still plans edit out his genuine compliments, and he goes to call the police against the protagonist and Motoha for "breaking into" the shooting. Though Shun is still adamant in wanting to take the fall, the protagonist, Motoha and Lufel manage to convince Shun to leave with them. In the fray, Shun unintentionally presses the Metaverse Navigator icon on his phone, sending them all into Miyazawa's Palace. They encounter Shadow Miyazawa, who traps the group, excluding Shun. Shadow Miyazawa torments Shun over what he did, and blames him for Asshouken, Masa and Yamagoshi's current troubles, trying to shatter Shun's resolve. However, with the encouragement of the others, Shun awakens his Persona, Mandrin, and makes up his mind to fight against Miyazawa.
After returning from their initial exploration of Miyazawa's Palace, Katayama catches the protagonist, Motoha and Shun attempting to rush back to their classes. She initially plans on telling them off for skipping classes, but eventually lets them go after a sincere apology from Shun, claiming responsibility for the three students' disappearance. He also promises that the three of them will turn to her if they ever get in trouble. After school, Shun decides to take on the Phantom Thief name "Soy," originating from the soy sauce in shoyu ramen..
Later, with Shun joining, the party has decided to change Miyazawa's heart. With Shun designs the Calling Cards and pasting them inside Asshouken the night before Miyazawa does his next shooting at the restaurant.
The Thieves enter the palace once more, and upon confronting him, Shadow Miyazawa transforms into Pan to fight against them, but eventually gets defeated. Shadow Miyazawa then confesses that his deeds stem from his failed career as an actor. He always wanted be the spotlight of movies since he was a child, but because of his looks, he never stood a chance to play the lead or even get many roles outside of playing extras. Eventually he had to give up on his dream and begrudgingly pivoted into his current career. He admits that his resentment towards restaurant chefs stemmed from jealousy over their ability to shine in their chosen passions. He apologizes to Shun for his inexcusable behavior, and he is a hack who only subsists on lies and is nothing when compared to the genuine article. However, Shun argues that, even through his falsities and lies, Miyazawa's tongue couldn't lie to himin spite of his complete intent to lambast his work, indicating that some part of Miyazawa is still real and still genuinely values passion and craftsmanship. He encourages Miyazawa to embrace that authenticity, as it is one of the things that makes life worth living. He asks Miyazawa to take the responsibility and to set things right with the people he'd hurt, promising to serve him a bowl of ramen if he becomes penniless in the process. Grateful for a chance to start over, Shadow Miyazawa takes Shun's words to heart.
As they leave the Metaverse, the group discuss the fact that both Kiuchi and Miyazawa seemed like they could have been normal people that had somehow had their desires became twisted. Lufel shares that when he touched Miyazawa's treasure, he sensed that his desires may have been manipulated by another party, leading him to speculate that there might be some sort of mastermind behind the incidents. He also points to how Shadow Miyazawa alluded to some unknown party before fading away.
Soon after the success of the change of heart, Miyazawa confesses his wrongdoings in a press conference, and promises to retract all negative comments he has given and compensate for all chefs, and restaurant owners, as well as their family, friends, and other related persons victimized by him even though he knows just apologizing is not enough, so he'll also completely retire from all media platforms. When being asked about the reason of giving this sudden confession, he says that he feels like his evil mind was taken away by someone and completely breaks down in tears.
“Chapter 3: Concerto For Rulebreakers”[]
During the Phantom Thieves' exploration around Akashi's Palace, the protagonist sees a vision of Akashi stalking and then violently stabbing Riko from behind, as Motoha's screams her name in horror. After Wonder shares this with the group, Lufel speculates that the visions might be precognitive in nature, and Closer points out that such visions allowed the group to learn of Yamagoshi's gift to Soy. Soy argues that none of his visions have actually come to pass and that the visions may be figments of Wonder's imagination borne from his anxiety. However, Wind acknowledges the possibility of them being supernatural (though is skeptical that Akashi would do anything so rash), and suggests that Wonder's premonitions are not set in stone but are instead possible outcomes representing worst case scenarios. Wonder then considers an alternate possibility: that the visions are not necessarily precognitive, but are actually events that have actually happened at some point. Closer offhandedly suggests that Wonder may have been sent back to prevent those bad futures, comparing it to some time travel manga tropes. Though the matter is not fully settled, Wind concludes that, considering how supernatural the Metaverse is to begin with, how the visions have allowed the Thieves to obtain critical information in the past, it would be wise to consider Wonder's visions seriously going forward.
During the groups investigation into Katayama, Masa reveals that he used to be a delinquent when he was in high school, and he has known Kumi Katayama since then, who was famous among the locals as the rushing bicycle rider with the nickname "Shining Legs," due to her rapid cycling speed.
