History
A scanner is a device that tends to be used to examine something, such as sensing recorded data in a bar code.
The enemy may be based on a term from the science-fiction movie Scanners, where the titular characters are rare humans with the powers of telepathy and telekinesis. The movie is most remembered today for this image taken from a scene where a man's head explodes after being "scanned."
