Etymology[]
Gyokusai (玉砕*)? is a euphemism for honorable death in battle. The phrase is often associated with World War II, however, it was adapted from a passage in the Book of Northern Qi -- "A true man would [rather] be the shattered jewel, ashamed to be the intact tile."
