Ryuichi is Akiko Yano's boyfriend and Charlie's classmate. At the beginning of the game, the two of them are hiding from demons in the first floor's storage room. After the protagonist has defeated either Faunus or Melusine in the school's gym, Ideo Hazama will kidnap Akiko. In Yumi and Reiko's routes, Ryuichi and Akiko are found in the World of Sloth after having been turned into stone.
In Charlie's route, Ryuichi can be found in each dungeon visited by the protagonist as he is looking for Akiko. Ryuichi finally finds Akiko in the World of Wrath, where she is being kept captive by Hazama. Hazama gives the protagonist a series of trials in order to free Akiko while forbidding Ryuichi from participating, all in order to anger him. Finally, Ryuichi loses his temper and tries to attack Hazama who teleports both Akiko and him away. The protagonist and Charlie later find them turned into stone. Hazama says that the couple might be able to return to normal if the stone is smashed, and the player is given the choice of doing it or not. Even if the player refuses, Charlie will do it himself, accidentaly killing both of them.
Etymology[]
Ryuichi is named after the Japanese musician Ryuichi Sakamoto. His girlfriend is likewise named after the musician Akiko Yano, who was his namesake's wife. The two of them were already separated by the time of if...'s release and they finally divorced in 2006.
- The name Ryuichi means "dragon" (龍) (ryu) and "one" (一) (ichi).
- Ryuichi's surname Sakamoto means "slope, hill" (坂) (saka) and "base, root, origin, source" (本) (moto).
