"Without military power, the crown's voice means nothing! When I am king, I will establish a unified nation with the roussainte tribe at its head! Our tribes, our status, they mean something. You can stray from a monolith, but it will still remain. There can be no true peace without using the power we command!"
—Rudolf Krause, Metaphor: ReFantazio

Rudolf Humulus Krause, known simply as Rudolf, is a character in Metaphor: ReFantazio and a candidate for the Tournament for the Throne.

Appearances[]

Personality[]

Rudolf is described by Gallica as the worst type of candidate that should never take the throne under fears of him making the tribes more segregated than they already are. He is arrogant, racist and fully convinced of the supremacy of the roussainte tribe, aspiring to take the throne so it rules over all other races. He has declared the elda and paripus as being inferior to a "true roussainte" like him and perceives Basilio's pity on him as a humiliation to his pride. He also appears to be irritable, as demonstrated by how he only has two in-game portraits of him scowling and frowning. He however, does humble himself for a bit after getting beaten; when spoken to in the epilogue, he merely tells the protagonist that while he doesn't accept him as king, the public will want a king that acts on his ideas.

Profile[]

Rudolf was a former noble of the once-glorious roussainte Krause family, which had fallen into the hands of a lesser local noble family during the Annex War. As a result, he wanted to restore the status of his family to the point of an obsession, and is willing to launch an invasion of the Principality of Montario despite his family originating from there. In the present day, he is a militarist candidate for the Royal Tournament, he criticizes the current personal union system as weak, and pledges a roussainte military dictatorship. His gauntlet runner is known as the Steel Lion. Because of his extreme ideologies, he has no supporters other than fellow roussainte. However, a large amount of the roussainte population in the country support his rhetoric, making him one of the stronger side contenders of the royal tournament with many followers in spite of his ideological shortcomings. He participated in both rounds of the Tournament for the Throne and offered a legendary nail thought to be lost to history during the relic hunt.

Rudolf will appear in Altabury Heights between September 13th to September 23rd, where the protagonist can challenge him to a battle. When spoken to, he gloats at Sanctifex Forden being out of his way because he relied on religion for support and claims that the only thing that matters is military might, and proclaims that he should get rid of the minor candidates before challenging Count Louis, whose abilities are unknown. He continues on, telling the protagonist that he would include the protagonist in his own purge should he ever take the throne, and challenges him to locate his gauntlet runner for a battle. As an extra wager, he promises the protagonist that he will give him a weapon effective in defeating monsters should he win the duel. Gallica and the protagonist both felt that Rudolf was a madman that had to be stopped.

During the battle proper, Rudolf is accompanied by a pair of Rudolf's Partisans and calls the protagonist a "wretched imitation" of his "superior" kind and believed that the protagonist was delusional for having followers of multiple tribes, even decrying Hulkenberg as a disgraced knight despite being roussiante herself. When he is defeated, Basilio tries to pity him, but Rudolf treats it as an embarrassment. The paripus tells him that his thinking is more exhausting than it is worth, and Hulkenberg yells at him, telling him to renounce himself from the tournament as Basilio told him to. He drops the Giant Slayer on defeat just like he promised as a wager.

After his defeat in the hands of the protagonist, Rudolf drops out of the tournament as told. When spoken to in Altabury Heights afterwards, he admits that he merely had a fit of rage back in their duel and he has calmed down now. He admits that him being unable to defeat even the protagonist means that he is unable to take out Louis anyways, and thus he has decided to step out of the tournament.

During the epilogue, Rudolf can be found in Grand Trad alongside other NPCs. When spoken to, he states that while he will not support the protagonist as king, he encourages him to act on his ideals and not just keep them as empty rhetoric.
