Appearances[]

Design[]

Riko has long black hair with blunt bangs, including a hairpin with three pearl beads on the right side and hazel brown eyes. She wears the standard Kokatsu Academy uniform but with the addition of black pantyhose and brown loafers.

Her casual outfit consists of a blue-gray blouse with puffed sleeves and frilled detailing under a black pinafore-style dress with a dotted texture, a double-buckle belt and black tights.

As Wind, she wears an outfit resembling a kunoichi with a red, white and black mask with feather shaped accessories above the ears, a black, white and red kimono, a thick black belt with white and green string tying a large bronze bell and red and white rope at the back, green gloves, white and black high-heels and carries a paper umbrella.

In her Vast form, she wears a more combat and extravagant version of Wind's default appearance, along with white knee-high heeled boots with red soles.

Personality[]

Riko carries herself with a composure and maturity that befits her upbringing and status. Her sharp analytical mind and natural leadership make her a dependable figure during moments of crisis, as noted by her childhood friend, Motoha Arai.

To those around her, Riko may seem distant and unapproachable, her measured tones and reserved demeanor giving the impression of someone detached from personal connection. Yet this cool exterior is a carefully constructed facade, born of her upbringing in a world where worth was measured by status and achievement. Her belief that relationships were fundamentally transactional took root early, shaped by the cruel remarks of her father's former secretary before the secretary resigned from her job. This philosophy was further reinforced by her father's own pragmatic teachings. As a result, Riko harbored a deep skepticism towards the idea of unconditional love, seeing it as a luxury outside her reach.

After awakening to her Persona and integrating into the Phantom Thieves, Riko begins to experience genuine bonds that challenge her deeply ingrained worldview. Through her connections with the protagonist and her former teacher, Kumi Katayama, she learns that vulnerability, love and trust are not weaknesses but sources of strength. These relationships show her that she can be valued not just for her accomplishments or lineage, but for the person she truly is.

As Riko confronts the rigid expectations of her past, she begins to explore facets of herself that were long suppressed. Her curiosity and individuality emerge in small ways, such as her surprise at discovering the everyday joy of eating ramen for the first time. Riko also displays a maternal side towards the group, especially evident when she worries about Motoha's diet. This instinct for nurturing extends to the rest of the Phantom Thieves, as Riko subtly assumes a protective role within the team.

Over time, Riko learns to balance her analytical nature with newfound emotional authenticity, allowing a warmer, more playful side to emerge. Her natural seriousness is occasionally offset by moments of enthusiasm, such as the time when she had become so engrossed in a crane game that she won far more candy than she could have on her own.

Riko was unaware of the situations that her father's former secretary has before her departure from the job, until she came clean about her relative got the money from the loan shark, they came to her house and harassed her, which is why she stole the money from the company, but was caught for it by her, not really wanting to hurt Riko because she does love her and she felt bad she said hurtful things. While her father sympathized with her situation, he dealt with it carefully and recommended her to work at the hospital.

Profile[]

Her family owns UMETANE, the top enterprise specializing in processing and manufacturing of plum products.

“Prologue: Witness The Hidden World”[]

In the prologue, Riko encounters the protagonist near the stairs when he is having trouble asking a group of chatting female students to make room so he can pass. Riko helps him and encourages him to hold his will firmly.

“Chapter 1: Duel of the Burdened Ones”[]

Later in Chapter 1, Riko encounters the protagonist and Motoha at the aisle. She feels that something is different with the protagonist, who has already awakened his Persona at that time.

“Chapter 3: Concerto For Rulebreakers”[]

At the beginning of Chapter 3, Riko sees the protagonist and Motoha sheltering from the rain on her way to school by car and offers them a ride. She gets to know the protagonist's name, and the protagonist gets to know about her family background from Motoha later.

Following the new student management policy imposed by Kei Akashi, Riko is assigned as the monitor and mediator of affairs and conflicts of students. Yamanashi the vice principal also orders her to do his paperwork tasks. Though unclear about Akashi's true intention, she accepts both sides' requests to earn reviews from the faculty. Later, she encounters the protagonist, Motoha and Tomoko after being called to settle a dispute caused by two female students taking videos about drinks or food they are trying out. She reveals to the three that she does not believe in relationships built upon love or friendship, but still feels relieved to see Motoha and Tomoko willing to be on her side.

When Kumi Katayama asks Riko if she is forcing herself to do these tasks out of consideration, Riko questions back why she cares about herself so much in an unfriendly way. Then Akashi suddenly appears and starts a quarrel with Katayama, since Katayama was already forbidden to get close to students after class. This agitates her, leading to an outburst. Right at this time, Yamanashi and the two female students witness Katayama acting violently, which later leads to her suspension from work and mental breakdown. Riko starts suspect that Akashi may have planned to set up Katayama, and decides to investigate him. Later, she runs into the protagonist, Motoha and Shun during their discussion at the school rooftop, and finds out that they are also planning to investigate Akashi. Though being doubted by Shun, Riko proposes to discuss more on the investigation at another place as the school is under Akashi's monitoring, to which the three agree.

Riko invites the three to Kichijoji to share their thoughts about the recent incidents surrounding Katayama and Akashi. When the three arrive Kichijoji, they see Riko introducing the ongoing promotion of UMETANE in a TV show. Shun is surprised to know that UMETANE is owned by Riko's family and expresses his gratitude and high review of UMETANE's products to Riko, which helps the two break the ice. After getting changed, Riko meets the three at a local coffee shop to have their discussion. Riko shares with the three that Akashi could be the one behind Katayama's suspension and mental breakdown, as Akashi used to work as a consultant for many companies with rumors saying he has built his success by setting up those who objected against his proposals. After the talk, the four agree to cooperate and come up with a plan to investigate Akashi. Lufel also gives opinions about their cooperation and eventually agrees. Riko somehow senses him.

When Riko and Akashi are working in the student counseling room, Motoha comes in and asks Akashi out to give opinions about the school as distraction. When Akashi is away, the protagonist and Shun guard the door, and Riko tries accessing Akashi's computer for information. While risking being caught, the four eventually manage to pull off their plan with Riko finding the password to unlock the computer and obtaining data about Katayama in it.

Later, the four gather again at the coffee shop in Kichijoji to share their findings. Riko finds a large quantity of photos and video footage of Katayama on Akashi's computer, proving that Akashi has been searching for Katayama's weakness that he can make use of, and he is the one behind Katayama being labeled as a Menace and her suspension from her job. Lufel then tells the three to ask about the password to unlock Akashi's computer as it could be the key to unlock the gate that keeps them from going further in Katayama's Palace. Riko startled as she clearly hears Lufel's voice, but she still agrees to share the password. After they disperse, Riko decides to follow the other three, sensing that they are keeping secrets from her.

Riko follows the three to Shibuya Square, only to lose them as they have entered the Metaverse. Surprised of their disappearance, she finds Shun's notebook on the ground where they were standing. When she is trying to call Motoha to confirm, she finds a strange icon on her phone and presses it, causing her to enter the Metaverse as well.

Having no idea of where she is, Riko finds the protagonist, Motoha and Shun in their Phantom Thief attire, as well as Lufel turning into his vehicle form. A flying kite appears out of nowhere and gives her direction of where the three are going, which she follows. Later, Riko meet the three and Lufel when they are having trouble finding the password as Shun has dropped his notebook, and explains to the surprised four how she arrived. With some information exchange, Riko gets to know Lufel and learns about the Metaverse, Katayama's Palace and the current situation. The four eventually agree to explore the Palace with Riko to dig out the secrets between Katayama and Akashi.

During their exploration, they see some scenes of Katayama doing her job as a responsible teacher, including when Katayama did a home visit with Riko's father to ask about her family business succession issue. This makes Riko remember how Katayama asked her when she was in junior high school, if prioritizing succession of her family business was really what she wanted, hence start to rethink the reason why Katayama always cares about her.

The five make their way to a place where they meet Shadow Katayama, who does not want her students to be hurt by her. However, Shadow Akashi appears and makes Shadow Katayama go wild and attack them. Seeing how Katayama is being forced to suffer, Riko finally realizes that her teacher had always been her strongest supporter and has genuinely cared about her when few other adults in her life ever showed it, going against her beliefs about relationship. This realization helps her make up her mind to save Katayama, and she awakens her Persona, Chiyome. With Riko joining the battle to provide navigation, the group manage to withstand the attack, but Shadow Akashi also escapes and takes Shadow Katayama with him. The five decides to go back to the real world as Riko is exhausted after her awakening of Persona.

Later on on the school rooftop, Riko officially joins the Phantom Thieves, and takes on the code name "Wind." After setting up their plan to save Katayama, she proposes to first go visit Katayama at a bar in Shinjuku, where she has been spending most of her time after her suspension. When they meet Katayama at the bar, Riko apologizes to Katayama for not understanding her teacher's earnest care towards her, and not accepting it before, and expresses her gratitude and determination to help Katayama. Riko states her intent to steal her twisted wishes and save her. Though this confuses Katayama, Riko's words greatly comforts Katayama and allows her Treasure to materialize in her Palace.

The Phantom Thieves returns to Katayama's Palace to steal Katayama's Treasure. They meet Shadow Katayama and manage to get her understanding on taking her Treasure, the manga that Katayama once loved and admired its protagonist as a hot-blooded teacher. However, Shadow Akashi interrupts and makes Shadow Katayama lose control again, transforming her into Kiskil-lilla. Forced to fight the rampaging Shadow Katayama, the group eventually fight her off and change her back to her normal form, but Shadow Akashi escapes once again. After Shadow Katayama disappears with relief, the group is forced to escape without taking her Treasure as Shadow Akashi shuts down the whole Palace.

The group needs a new strategy against Akashi. After learning about Katayama's past from Masa at Asshouken when being invited to have dinner together there by Motoha, Riko has come up with a new plan. The next day, she protests to Akashi and Yamanashi about Katayama's unfair suspension in front of other teachers, and later distributes a summary of Akashi's wrongdoings to participating students and the present Yamanashi at a student committee meeting. Both are to attract Akashi's attention and eventually let Akashi choose Riko as the next target, so Shadow Akashi would choose Riko's shadow self as the new power supply of Katayama's Palace. When Akashi starts spreading rumors about Riko bribing Yamanashi to get good marks on Divine Justice, Riko manages to remain immune to the rumors with the support of the protagonist, Lufel, Motoha and Shun. However, this also causes Yamanashi to attract the criticism and turn to Akashi. Akashi then switches his target to Yamanashi. Though different from what Riko expected, with Shadow Yamanashi being the new power supply, Katayama's Palace is reopened for the group to continue exploring and make their way to Akashi's Palace.

When exploring Akashi's Palace, the group learns that Akashi was once an assistant director at Marutoku Broadcasting Station, until he was used and betrayed by his colleague and his ex-girlfriend, and later convinced by a mysterious man to revenge on other people. The group sympathizes with Akashi's past, but holds a firm belief that it can never be the reason of him destroying innocent people's lives.

After their exploration, the protagonist sees a vision of the desperate Akashi stalking Riko and stabbing her with a knife. Motoha mentions he had a vision of Shun losing Miyazawa's challenge and its consequences before. Lufel thinks the protagonist might be seeing upcoming future events, which Riko adds that it could be the future that they are trying to prevent from happening. Riko asks the protagonist to let them know once he sees another vision.

After finishing preparation, the group sends Akashi's calling card through Divine Justice to materialize his Treasure. During their final confrontation with Shadow Akashi, Riko is so enraged by Akashi's depravity that her persona achieves a new (albeit temporary) form: Vast Chiyome, allowing her to fight in the battle directly.

When Katayama's suspension is lifted, Riko is delighted to see the teacher return to work.

“Chapter 4: Melancholy of the Masked Actor”[]

Riko sees the news that Akashi was killed by a homeless man who hold a grudge against him. Her classmates ask her about it due her being one of Akashi's targets.

Later on, Riko, as a member of the student council, is brought on to assist with the joint student festival between Kokatsu Academy and Kiga High School. She brings along the protagonist, Motoha and Shun to assist. As per Kiga High student Aran Hirano's suggestion, they decide to host a school play based off of Aran's work: Phantom Thief Familia. Aran's upperclassman, Shoki Ikenami, is brought on to the project to assist as well, due to his extensive acting background as a famous actor.
