Pharaoh, meaning "great house," was a title that wasn't used to refer to the kings of Egypt until the New Kingdom. The pharaohs were considered gods on earth in Ancient Egypt. Since the Egyptians believed life continued after death, the pharaohs were mummified and placed within their own pyramids along with treasures, furniture, everyday items and food. It was believed that disturbing a mummy, especially a pharaoh's mummy, would result in the Curse of the Pharaohs upon the one who did it.
