The Persona 4 manga is a manga adaptation of Persona 4. It is written and illustrated by Shūji Sogabe.
Overview[]
Happy with the success of Persona 4, Atlus commissioned a manga adaptation of the game to be made the year following its release. Shūji Sogabe, who also worked on the Persona 3 manga, is also put in charge of this adaptation, and juggles the publication of two mangas, even if Persona 4 is prioritized during its start. The manga is once again published in the Dengeki Black Maoh magazine, edited by Media Works, starting on September 19, 2008 and ending serialization on March 27, 2019. The manga does not feature any of the story additions from Persona 4 Golden.
The manga follows the protagonist, named Souji Seta. Because of the nature of his parents' work, Souji has frequently changed schools. At the start of the story, Souji moves in from the city to Inaba, a small town where his uncle Ryotaro Dojima lives. As he gets ready to spend one whole year there, Souji is exposed to a series of bizarre murders that take place.
Differences from the original game[]
- The main difference is that the protagonist is given the name Souji Seta, and is shown talking in the manga. The manga cuts a lot of small details and scenes in order to fit the manga format and its shorter length. It occasionally adds certain scenes. Additionally, Teddie is named "Kuma," his original Japanese name, which simply means "Bear" in Japanese.
- Souji can only summons three Personas: Izanagi, Magatsu-Izanagi, and Izanagi-no-Okami.
- The Investigation Team (except Souji) can awaken their Personas and fight their Shadows without defeating them.
- Their Personas evolved to their Ultimate forms without any involvement with Souji as they are able to resolve their own problems.
Volume 1[]
- The manga does not start with Souji in the Velvet Room. Instead, he is introduced to it as well as Igor and Margaret when he awakens his Persona.
- It doesn't show flashes of Mayumi Yamano being pushed through the TV, like in the first animated cutscene of Persona 4.
- It also doesn't show Rise in an ad for a brand of soda in a TV on the train to Inaba.
- A flashback shows Souji saying goodbye to his first year class before transferring to Inaba.
- The manga shows Yosuke's inner monologue and goes more into details about his feelings.
- Adachi does not vomit after seeing Mayumi Yamano's body.
- Souji does not hit his head on the table after being sucked into his TV.
- Yosuke does not try to pee in the strange room during their first trip to the Midnight Channel; the joke is completely absent.
- Souji punches Yosuke when he is frightened by his Shadow in order to make Yosuke snap back to reality.
- Yosuke does not directly accept his Shadow Self after it's defeated by Souji. Instead, he does so internally.
- After Yosuke gains his Persona, him and Souji punch each other at the same time, akin to Yosuke's Rank 10 Social Link event.
