Pearls were one of the attractions that drew Julius Caesar to Britain. They are freshwater pearls from mussels, though not all mussels and oysters produce them. For thousands of years, most seawater pearls were retrieved by divers working in the Indian Ocean in areas such as the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea, and the Gulf of Mannar between Sri Lanka and India. Pliny the Elder praised the pearl fishery of the Gulf as the most productive in the world.
The word pearl comes from the the Latin perna, meaning "leg."

In Shin Megami Tensei, Pearls are used to trade for items or Element Race demons.
In Shin Megami Tensei II, Pearls increase Aleph's stats when nine are held.
In Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, Pearls can be given to demons to increase their Loyalty.
In Megami Ibunroku Persona, Pearls can be added to a fusion, reducing or raising a Persona's Order.
In Persona 3, Pearls are used to trade for Balm of Life and Precious Egg in Shinshoudo Antiques.
In Persona 5, Pearls cannot be used in any way and can only be sold for money.
