This article covers information about the protagonist as a party member, including uses and strategies, in Persona 5 and its spinoffs. The article also covers core mechanics and intricacies of combat from a general perspective.

Overview[]

Persona 5[]

Eigaon P5

Using Arsène as a demo to combat.

The protagonist starts out with Arsène. Unlike other party members, the protagonist can never be swapped out of battle, and having him faint will result in an automatic Game Over.

The protagonist has the special property of being a Wild Card, making him able to summon and switch between different Personas in battle, as well as change his stock of Personas to an extent. This lets him swap out between multiple different strategies, as well as switch his elemental affinities. For a list of all available Personas the protagonist can use, see List of Persona 5 Personas.

In combat, he can only change Personas once per turn, so additional actions from One Mores and Baton Passes won't allow for additional swapping, but he can make use of those to switch once mid-turn. Switching isn't locked unless his turn is executed.

The main way the protagonist can obtain Personas is through negotiation against Shadows. If he responds to the correct answers to remarks from the respective Shadow, they will join the protagonist as their Persona. This method only applies to normal encounters, as bosses cannot be negotiated with. One more way to receive new Personas is by fusing two or more to receive a new one. However, the Personas cannot be of a higher Level than his own, otherwise he cannot use them.

Although the Persona's stats, levels, affinities and skills reflect the protagonist's power in battle, the HP and SP are stats of the protagonist, and cannot be changed by swapping Personas. They are only determined by the protagonist's own individual Level. His own level is also put into calculation when he receives Experience and any special damage boosts/reductions from being overleveled or underleveled. Additionally, the protagonist's equipment is also separate from the Personas he summons, and like the rest of the group, the weapons he can equip are unique to him. Armor and accessories are mostly accessible to other or all combatants.

P5 HomeTraining1

The protagonist training at home.

There is a method to improve the protagonist's HP and SP by partaking in the training activity during his Daily Life. Depending on the location, he can boost his HP significantly, or distribute it between his HP and SP. This method is only available to the protagonist. Training results can be improved through the use of protein items, with maximum results being from training using moist protein. Training eventually begins yielding diminishing returns, however.

The protagonist can also modify the properties of Personas as well. He can teach them skills via obtaining Skill Cards, by having them inherit skills in fusion, and have them learn Passive skills that protect them from their weaknesses by putting them in Lockdown.

The protagonist has several accessories that only he can equip: these are the Black Rock, all the accessories rewarded by Sojiro Sakura if he scores high on exams (Tough Belt, Dandy Mirror, Leblanc Charm and Boss Undies,) and all the accessories gifted to him by the girls at Hawaii (Menehune Dolls, Tiki Keychain, Hawaiian Ring and Honu Charm.)

The protagonist is the only member of the playable cast whose ultimate melee weapon is unavailable in the first playthrough of the story as he cannot access Satanael until New Game+. As such, his strongest option during the first playthrough is the Misericorde. In New Game+, he can use the Electric Chair Execution on Satanael to create Paradise Lost, which reduces Curse damage. The protagonist can create his ultimate gun by executing Lucifer to create the Tyrant Pistol which gives him a +10 boost to his Magic stat.

Persona 5 Royal[]

With the inclusion of traits, each Persona has a Passive perk that activates in battle. It's separate from skills, and cannot be changed, aside from being inherited through fusion. The active trait in battle depends on which Persona the protagonist has summoned.

The stat boost rates in the training activity have been changed, so that the protagonist can still earn a large amount of points after maximizing his training, instead of just 1 point per segment. Additionally, he can also spend time in an old temple, which boosts his SP exclusively.

The protagonist can apply Incense to his Personas to boost their stats.

The protagonist can also boost his HP and SP by hanging out with Sumire Yoshizawa and Takuto Maruki respectively.

The Persona Compendium has also been extended and modified. For a list of all available Personas the protagonist can use in Persona 5 Royal, see List of Persona 5 Royal Personas.

The Invisible Veil, a special reward, can only be equipped by the protagonist.

His ultimate weapons remain the same, but he cannot access Paradise Lost until New Game+ since Satanael is inaccessible outside of that. If he is unable to fulfill the requirements to access the third semester, Misericorde remains his strongest first playthrough knife, otherwise the Punish Dagger, which can be bought from Untouchable is his strongest possible knife during the first playthrough. Using Electric Chair Execution under a fusion alarm, he can create the upgraded form of his ultimate melee weapon, Paradise Lost R, which retains its high Curse damage reduction effect. His Tyrant Pistol becomes Tyrant Pistol EX under a fusion alarm and gives him Ma+15.

Persona 5 Strikers[]

In Persona 5 Strikers, although the protagonist can still not be switched out of battle, as any other party member can be controlled, Game Over only occurs where all active party members have fainted.

Strategies[]

Party Arrangement[]

Although the protagonist is always in the party, he can assign up to three allies to participate in combat with him. Aside from each of them having several key elements and affinities they use for offense, their stats and general skill pool differentiate them from one-another by establishing their roles and how they can be best used in combat. The recurring theme with the roles of the combatants of Persona 5 is based on how they all tackle their enemies:

Member Affinity Utility Role Description
Ryuji Sakamoto Elec Icon P5 Melee Icon P5 Offensive recovery Power-based combatant with poor accuracy and wide damage variance, overall unpredictable results, but makes up for it with techniques to overturn the enemy team. May support the party with Tarukaja or open Shock Technicals with low-damage Zio skills, or Baton Pass via landing Criticals.
Morgana Wind Icon P5 Healing Icon P5 Emergency recovery General offense with an emphasis on emergency healing. Supports in terms of evasion, and can take on a role as an opener by exploiting the bonuses of Criticals with Lucky Punch.
Ann Takamaki Fire Icon P5 Ailment Icon P5 Magic combat Magic-based, straightforward offense; freedom in multi-target damage and ailment affliction with Burn, which can be increased with Concentrate. Variety in support especially against the enemy, such as Tarunda, Dekaja, ailments and single-target Dia. Efficient in combat against Magic-based combatants.
Yusuke Kitagawa Ice Icon P5 Melee Icon P5 Physical combat Rich variety of Physical skills with freedom in multi-target offense; single-target may exploit Critical hits. Can enhance and perfect accuracy with Sukukaja; efficient in Phys vs Phys combat due to evasion, which is already in effect by Counter skills.
Makoto Niijima Nuclear Icon P5 Healing Icon P5 Defensive support Consistent healing with an addition of defense in the form of Rakukaja and Dekunda skills. May switch to dealing Technical damage afflicted from certain elemental attacks.
Haru Okumura Psy Icon P5 Ranged Icon P5 Concentrated support Luck-based combatant in terms of accuracy, Criticals, Technicals. Has a rich variety of tools in terms of support (such as Tetrakarn and Makarakarn), but they're also based on luck due to freedom of choice; can protect against all ailments.
Goro Akechi
Robin Hood
Light Icon P5 Almighty Icon P5 Variety-based offense Pure, rich offense, but potentially rigid as an ally. Nearly no support, aside from Insta-Kill skill. Has no chemistry in Technical and Baton Pass exploitation.
Goro Akechi
Loki
Dark Icon P5 Almighty Icon P5 Concentrated offense Practical & typeless offense, with only having Debilitate as support. Finisher that works off of the support of his teammates. No chemistry in Technical and Baton Pass exploitation.
Sumire Yoshizawa Light Icon P5 Melee Icon P5 Chance-based offense Offense-based with an emphasis on high Critical rate and evasion. May enhance the party's Critical rate with Brave Step. Flexible in combat when it comes to One Mores and Baton Passes.

It can be beneficial to establish a proper long-term plan and switch between party members on the go, as to manage their SP consumption. Kamoshida's Palace does not allow for much customization of party members as the capacity of active party members matches with the number of allies available. Because Palaces have different amounts of party members, the strategies between managing them may differ: the common pattern is how many of them there are in comparison to the 3 slots available in combat.

During Okumura's Palace, Shido's Palace and the Depths of Mementos, the protagonist has 6 allies in total, and as such can rotate between two specific set-ups accordingly. Some examples include Ryuji, Yusuke and Makoto, a set-up which is more offense-oriented, and Morgana, Ann and Haru, which is defense-oriented. This adds freedom to party customization, especially in terms of selecting accessories and establishing stronger chemistry between active allies.

Cycles like these normally require the protagonist restores his own SP to last an additional run, which can usually be done with brewing coffee at Leblanc. To maximize the use items recover SP for all party members, such as those from cooking curry, should be used only as soon as all other party members are basically out of SP. This will ensure a stable recovery, and if possible will allow to continue the cycle from the beginning.

In Kaneshiro's Palace and Futaba's Palace, it is possible to maintain 2 cycles with 5 party members, but one party member will have to be used twice. This set-up will require that the protagonist recovers his SP alone twice as well as one party member once: recovering all with an all-round SP recovery item wraps up the cycle. In Persona 5 Royal's Maruki's Palace, because there are 8 party members, the protagonist can maintain 3 cycles with 1 party member used twice. Via Jazz Jin on January 29th, party members may be taught Spell Master, to ensure that they can be used double as long, which can be used as a substitute for recovering their SP alone when they run out.

In the midst of Madarame's Palace, the party is set to work with 5 members, 1 of which will have to be left on standby. It is recommended to rotate between party members from time to time. A general rule of thumb is to switch out around when a 3rd of the party's SP has been used, and every time get rid of the party member that has the least substantial amount of HP and bring back the party member that sat out last time. This can technically increase the party's efficiency by 1/3rd. Although this restricts personalization of party members, if 3 were drained of their SP simultaneously, even if the last unused party member is brought back in, there will be too little support to maintain momentum in battle. The protagonist will still need to have his SP recovered during this process.

Niijima's Palace follows similar rules to Madarame's, which has 7 allies. At best, one can settle to drain 3 party members at once, while rotating back and forth between the remaining 4, so there's room for one pre-established strategy. The protagonist might need to have his SP recovered twice.

Skillpool Model[]

See also: Skill pool

Persona 5's party member design emphasizes on oppressive and inflexible circumstances with minimal flexibility aside from exploiting opportunities, and there's a consistent system that the characters are designed around, especially when it comes to rounding down their playstyles involving their final skills. Though not mandatory to use, this system flows accordingly with the mechanic of swapping Personas, allowing the protagonist to have an edge in battle in spite of the limitations, while also fleshing out his Persona. Though not optional and the rules can be broken if not completely ignored, this system allows to better understand the party members' playstyles and the thought process behind them.

Certain rules are as follows:

  • Party members have 3 passive and 5 active skills to ensure that their skill pool isn't overwhelming to use.
  • The purpose of the 5 skills cannot clash with one-another and each has a specific purpose, ensuring that any slot doesn't go to waste.
  • The main 4 skills revolve around the Persona's playstyle in combat. Usually offensive, healing and instant support skills.
  • The main 4 skills may be split into two groups: one that can be used instantly and with ease, while another is a more risky maneuver that cannot be summoned as easy, either because it has disadvantages in combat or because it's costly, and so on.
  • The 5th skill is a Support skill that makes it easier for the party member to perform certain actions in combat by making up for their disadvantages; whether it be that it allows them to perform emergency, situational skills or stick to primary as much as possible. If not, it allows them to stick to the. Usually a -kaja or -kunda skill: skills that are timer-based and weak, but with guaranteed effects.
  • The 6th skill, a passive, directly complements the 5th skill one way or another. Usually limited, situational or chance-based, and can be any "Boost" skill (magic or ailment) but they always exist for the purpose of adding flexibility to the Persona's playstyle in the same fashion as the 5th skill.
  • The 7th skill implies "preference" to how one wishes to use the Persona, or rather towards which playstyle they're leaning towards. Generally an "Amp" skill. Normally, the focus of this skill is the same as the 5th skill as it encourages switching gears, but that rule isn't mandatory. Candidates for preference skills can also utilize the role of the 6th skill.
  • The 8th skill is an insurance skill that protects the character's weakness. For party members, that's usually an "Evade" skill.

Skill Expression[]

The protagonist has access to many skills, some of which are exclusive to the protagonist.

Should he rely on his party members' abilities, it is recommended to consider using Wall skills during early game in order to protect their weaknesses:

Skill For Note
Fire Wall Yusuke Kitagawa Yusuke may rely on evasion from Sukukaja to cover his weakness. Albeit it has an emphasis on offense rather than defense in terms of how Yusuke uses it.
Ice Wall Ann Takamaki Ice Wall is highly recommended for Ann as her evasion and defenses are all very low. Although she can punish Burned enemies with extra damage should they do 1 More combos, it is risky for Ann.
Elec Wall Morgana Morgana has an emphasis on covering for weaknesses for both himself and the party's by using his high evasion and Masukunda. Albeit luck-based, it is effective against minimizing weakness damage and 1 More combos as much as possible.
Wind Wall Ryuji Sakamoto Normally Ryuji should be able to endure weaknesses and combos due to his bulky nature, but it is important to add that he'll take over 3 times the normal damage from the attack should his weakness be exploited and he's followed up again with a 1 More.
Psy Wall Makoto Niijima Makoto, albeit evasive, has no other means to counter Psy attacks, including Technical damage from mental ailments. Weakness damage pierces and overwhelms the effects of of Rakukaja.
Nuke Wall Haru Okumura Nuke Wall is only obtainable in Persona 5. Haru may be forced to protect herself with Makarakarn, but otherwise can cover for other allies' weaknesses using the shield.

Timer-based buffs, though giving a straightforward stat boost, can be used tactically to give the party flexibility in terms of how they act in combat. Party-based buffs allow for advantages in using skills that are disadvantageous without them, debuffs allow the user to stick to using skills while preventing them from switching gears to an essential, but still disadvantageous state. In short, Attack-based buffs revolve around chance-based skills, Defense-based buffs interacts with substituting for support, Accuracy/Evasion is based on costly maneuvers with risky undertones.

Skill Coverage Explanation
Focus Direction
Tarukaja / Matarukaja Risk Discouraging As an offensive tactic, it justifies using weaker offensive skills with secondary benefits, such as ailments.
Rakukaja / Marakukaja Support Though defensive, it allows the combatant to put aside defensive tactics and switch to offense.
Sukukaja / Masukukaja Emergency Functions the opposite way of Tarukaja, where it justifies stronger, but more reckless skills, such as those with low accuracy or an HP cost.
Tarunda / Matarunda Support Preventive Prevents the combat from resorting to defensive tactics and allows them to stick to offense as usual. Aforementioned skills can be interpreted as "time wasters."
Rakunda / Marakunda Risk Though it allows the combatant to stick to offensive tactics, the alternative it strays away from can be interpreted as a "risky" maneuver the debuff cannot benefit from, such as insta-kill.
Sukunda / Masukunda Emergency Allows the combatant to stick to an offensive stance, preferably preventing them from covering up for risks that can be resolved through emergency skills: powerful abilities with strict drawbacks.
Heat Riser All-purpose Discouraging All three buffs at once, but can be controlled in any situation to give flexibility to using offensive, but otherwise disadvantageous tactics.
Debilitate Preventive All three debuffs at once, it gives the combatant a state of comfort regardless of which debuff is appropriate. This is in situations where regular offense is advantageous by default.
Rebellion / Revolution Safety Opportunity Critical-based modifier. Always switches to Phys or Gun skills for the sake of Critical exploitation.

Alternatively, there are instant skills that grant the user control in terms of power and defense; it is not recommended to improvise with them the same way as with timer-based buffs. Preferably, Phys-based skills can be interpreted as "biding" skills, while Magic skills can be interpreted as "emergency" skills.

Skill Coverage Explanation
Role Direction
Charge Biding Offense Gives the combatant a controlled power boost for their next attack. Divided by Phys/Gun or Magic.
Concentrate Emergency
Tetrakarn Biding Defense Protects an ally or self from a single enemy attack and repels it back. Divided by Phys/Gun or Magic.
Makarakarn Emergency
Dekaja Cleanse Protects self and the entire party by cleansing all buffs or debuffs from an advantageous view, preventing any inflexibility in performance. Divided based on faction targeted.

Constructing Personas[]

General[]

Exploiting weaknesses (Magic based)[]

To ensure weaknesses are always exploited by the protagonist alone, the protagonist will need to have at least 2 different Personas that both cover all elemental affinities: that way, the protagonist can take care of exploiting all available weaknesses with his first Persona, then switch to the second for the rest. Physical and Gun skills aren't mandatory for the purpose of exploiting weaknesses, as both already come in the form of melee and ranged attacks.

It is recommended to use two Personas with a high Magic stat, and ensure their inheritance types don't contradict (ex. two Personas of the Electric inheritance type cannot learn Wind skills, and neither Personas of Curse and Ailment type can learn Bless skills.)

This set-up also allows for room for support skills (4 per both Personas), compared to lumping all 8 elements to one Persona. If their Magic stat is high, they can also use healing skills. It is also possible to give both Personas matching support skills for the purpose of flexibility.

Rakunda and Marakunda are unique to the protagonist, so it's recommended to apply those to him if possible.

The protagonist also has access to afflicting mental ailments that other party members cannot: particularly Rage, Fear and Brainwash, and in Persona 5 Royal, Despair. It is recommended to make use of those as they grant an opening to Technical damage from Psy skills that otherwise cannot be accessed.

Ailments (Luck based)[]

Those Personas revolve around afflicting ailments. It is recommended to add variance according to the effects of said ailments to strategize in advance, as well as add variety in exploiting Technical damage with Psy skills.

  • Confuse is recommended for farming for money off of enemies. The outcome will be higher depending on the protagonist's Luck stat.
  • Dizzy is also recommended for giving all party members the opportunity to exploit Technical damage.
  • Brainwash is effective against strong enemies, whether it's to have their support skills passed to the player party or to have the enemies deal damage and exploit their own weaknesses.
  • Despair blocks enemies from acting before instantly killing them 3 turns later.
  • Fear, if followed by Ghastly Wail, instantly kills all afflicted enemies.

As the set-up is luck-based, it is also recommended to have the Persona use Lucky Punch and Miracle Punch to focus on Downing enemies. It is also recommended to put down Insta-Kill skills, such as Mudo and Hama. If the Persona has Adverse Resolve, such as if it was inherited from Arsène, this can be useful as a last resort in enemy ambushes.

Additionally, the high Luck stat brings miscellaneous effects for the party, including extorting enemies for more money in negotiation.

Yoshitsune set-up[]

Yoshitsune can be set-up to be deadly in battle as not only does he have a strong signature Physical attack Hassou Tobi, he also has 4 resistances (3 of which block or reflect) and no weaknesses. With 7 remaining elements, Yoshitsune's remaining skill slots can be used to manually add the remaining resistances via Passive skills.

The only downfall to this strategy are that Yoshitsune cannot deal with enemies that block, repel or absorb Physical skills. There are also no skills that let Personas resist Gun, and Almighty attacks ignore resistances altogether.

Based on Party Arrangements[]

With Morgana[]
See also: Party/Morgana#Morgana & the protagonist

The protagonist is directly able to support Morgana's ability to land Critical hits with Lucky Punch: not only can he learn Sukukaja and Sukunda, he's the only party member that can learn Rebellion: enhancing Morgana with either will increase his chances of landing a Critical.

Although Morgana can learn Recarm and Samarecarm to revive his allies, the protagonist is normally the only one who can revive him in turn with the same skills.

Additionally, the protagonist may support Morgana with various defensive skills, such as Tarunda, Rakukaja and even Dekaja. Making use of shields appropriately can also help.

He might also substitute to use Fire skills in the chance of burning an enemy, opening up for Technical attacks from Morgana. Stacking that with Tarukaja and possibly Rakunda will maximize Morgana's opportunity to take down the enemy, should it be necessary.

With Haru[]
See also: Party/Haru Okumura#Haru & the protagonist

Under normal circumstances, Haru is deficient in opportunities for dealing Technical damage with her Psy skills. The protagonist is the only party member that can learn to afflict most mental ailments: this includes Rage, Fear and Brainwash, and Persona 5 Royal expands that with Despair. Confuse is already learnable by certain party members in both games.

Some of Haru's innate abilities are also hard to be imitated by the protagonist, as they cannot be learned via skill cards, but rather can only be learned and passed down by specific Personas: in Persona 5, these include Tetrakarn and Makarakarn, whereas in Royal, some are Amrita Drop and Amrita Shower.
