Effect[]
Persona 5 / Royal[]
In Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal, Paint is a special ailment.
While being Painted, a combatant has their model blackened and behaves as if they were weak to damage from every element (except Almighty), regardless of their current affinities. While this weakness does neutralize their abilities to null, repel, and absorb, it otherwise does not affect how much damage the afflicted would take (e.g. a combatant resistant to Fire would take the same amount of damage from a Fire attack whether they are Painted or not). Since this effect does not actually involve affinities, it takes precedence over affinity-modifying Passive skills, including Brush of Vanity and Zenith Defense, as well as elemental Wall skills. The combatant can still be protected by guarding, with Bleeding Dry Brush's absorptive barrier, Counter skills, or a physical/magic wall. The ailment has no effect on Bless and Curse Insta-Kill skills.
The combatant recovers at the start of their second turn. This duration, however, can be cut short by Insta-Heal, causing it to end at the start of their first turn.
As a special ailment, Healing skills and items cannot remove it, and it cannot be blocked by Persona trait "Immunity". The ailment can be inflicted even while the combatant is guarding, although guarding can still protect them from having their weakness exploited.
The Special Order that the party carries out on Madarame paintings inflicts an effect similar to Paint, but it lasts for 4 turns and does modify the affinities of the targets.
Persona 5 Tactica[]
Paint is a special mechanic exclusive to Repaint Your Heart DLC campaign. In combat, squares can be left unpainted or painted in blue (for the protagonist's team) or pink (for the enemy's team). Attacking an enemy unit allows a team to change the paint on the square where the unit stands, as well as some surrounding squares, to their team's color. Additionally, destroying paint cans on the battlefield results in the splashing of the attacker's team color onto nearby squares.
When standing on a square in their own team's color, a unit gains the Guard status and becomes resistant to all damage. On the other hand, standing on the enemy's color prevents a unit from attacking or using skills, and makes them vulnerable to attacks even while positioning next to Covers. Counter-type enemies can still perform a Counter regardless of the color of their squares, however.
In the campaign's last fight, the battlefield is initially painted in black, which inhibits the movement of the protagonist's team (but not the enemies). At the start of the protagonist's turn, Guernica automatically repaints some squares in blue and spawns a paint can on one of them. In the final phase, the whole battlefield is covered in multi-colored paint by Guernica, disabling the mechanic for the rest of the fight.
