History

Toyotama-hime (豊玉姫, "abundant, excellent jewel"), also known as Otohime (乙姫, "younger princess"), is a goddess in Japanese mythology, and the daughter of Ryuujin, the dragon god of the sea. She married the hunter Hoori and gave birth to a son, who in turn produced Emperor Jimmu, the first Emperor of Japan. After giving birth, she turned into a dragon or an alligator and flew away.

Trivia

• In the English version of Persona 2: Innocent Sin, Otohime's true form is described as a "shark," while in Eternal Punishment it is a "crocodile." This inconsistency is due to the Japanese name of the creature is called "yahiro wani" (八尋鰐), a mythic sea monster crosses between crocodile and shark. While Otohime constantly demonstrates traits of dragon (closer to crocodilia), the modern interpretations believe it is a shark and the old belief of crocodilia was a linguistic confusion of the shark species.
