The Nemean lion was a vicious monster in Greek mythology that lived at Nemea. It was eventually killed by Heracles for the first of his twelve labors, in which he had to slay it under orders from his cousin, King Eurystheus. Its golden fur was impenetrable and its claws were sharp enough to cut through any armor; Heracles eventually killed the lion by strangling it with his bare hands. He wore the Nemean lion's coat after killing it, as it was impervious to the elements and all but the most powerful weapons.
According to Hesiod, an ancient Greek poet, the Nemean lion was the offspring of Orthus, another creature slain by Heracles.
