A musketeer was a type of soldier equipped with a musket; the precursor to the rifleman. Musketeers were an important part of early modern warfare as they normally comprised the majority of their infantry. Muskets were replaced by rifles as the almost universal firearm for modern armies from 1850 to 1860.
In 1844, this group was the subject of the serial publication The Three Musketeers, first published in the magazine Le Siècle between March and July 1844. The author, Alexandre Dumas, based his work on the book Memoirs of Mister d'Artagnan, lieutenant captain of the first company of the King's Musketeers by Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras.
