Ushi no koku mairi is a practice of cursing someone to death dating back to the Edo period of Japan. Its name means "visiting (the shrine) during the ox hour."
The practitioner of the curse would dress in white robe and be crowned with three lit candles, then visit a shrine and hammer a small effigy (representing the target/victim) usually made out of straws with nails on a tree trunk of the shrine.
The ox hour (丑の刻 or 丑時) belongs to the classical time system "Shi Chen" (時辰) from China which partitions each day into 12 sections and each section is named after one of the Chinese zodiac. The ox hour is equivalent to 1am to 3am, because for the curse to succeed, its process must bear no witness.
