"Please show me the potential within yourself. The potential that can overgrow even the divine order of the universe itself."
—Miyako Hotsuin, Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker

Miyako Hotsuin is a character from Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker.

Appearances

Design

Miyako Hotsuin's face is similar to Yamato Hotsuin, but less pale, slightly more rounded, and with larger eyes. She wears a white-purple butterfly-shaped ribbon on her hair, a JP's uniform with a black heavy trench coat with a scabbard hanging, a black dress, and high length yellow boots. She carries her whip beneath her cloak.

In the Break Record ending, as a reborn human, wearing a white cape with a yellow ribbon in the front of the cape, a yellow dress in the same style as her previous black dress underneath the cape, and a pair of white boots. She also retains her white-purple butterfly-shaped ribbon on her hair.

Personality

In contrast with Yamato, Miyako is shown to be more soft-spoken and well-mannered, speaking and referring to the Protagonist and his friends politely (referring all of them as Mister or Miss, except Anguished One whom she refers as Alcor). Miyako is more open in welcoming the opinions of others and is at least willing to hear them out first before voicing her own opinions.

Aside from her politeness, she can be as cold as Yamato. Like Yamato, while leading JP's, she never shows her emotions and speaks nothing more than necessary to her subordinates. She expects her orders to be carried out as they are told and has little tolerance for disobedience. Just as Yamato has his pride as the successor of the Hotsuin clan, Miyako mostly acts in the name of Hotsuin. However, while Yamato leads JP's with an iron fist, Miyako leads JP's with more care. Another main difference between her and Yamato is that she is also more secretive, not giving a slightest bit of explanation to her own subordinates about her plan, taking the burden all to herself.

Miyako is a selfless individual. This selflessness originated from her love for humanity. She sees all human lives as equally important, but at the same time believes that in order to gain something, one needs to give up something in return, and choosing the path leading to a smaller sacrifice is for the best. Therefore, she has no hesitation to sacrifice the lives of others and even her own if it means saving mankind.

After joining the party, Miyako shows more of her softer side, but is still distant due to her insecurities with her own existence as a human/Triangulum hybrid. She is afraid that her feelings are merely a fake so she can fulfill the role given by Canopus, making her hesitant to socialise with her new friends. At this time, she becomes emotional and even cried when telling the Protagonist of her worries at the end of her Fate route. During the final battle with Canopus, she even calls him her Shining One, as he has helped her overcome her own inner turmoil, similar to what he had done with Al Saiduq.

While Miyako is mostly serious all the time, she becomes sneaky whenever talking to Yamato. She takes any chance or opening to tease him, enough to make the usually composed Yamato annoyed.

Profile

Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker

Prior to the Triangulum invasion, Miyako is created by Canopus to fill Yamato's absence in the third world, replacing his existence. Similarly to Yamato, Miyako's position as the successor of the Hotsuin household has deprived her of a normal childhood.

Miyako was not aware of her true identity as Cor Caroli and believes that she is a normal human until Alcor approached her, making her realize her true identity and also about what happened in the previous worlds. This realization shocks her as she also remembers that part of Canopus' plan is to destroy humanity. She eventually comes up with a plan to sacrifice her own life as well as the Protagonist and his friends' lives to make Alcor the true administrator. However, Alcor disagrees with her plan as he wants to believe in his friends' potential. Miyako, thinking there is no other way, imprisoned him and forcefully put the Septentrione into a catatonic state beneath the Sky Tower. She interrogated Alcor to give her the names of the Protagonist and his friends, but Alcor's refusal forced her to spread Nicaea Ver.2.0 during the invasion to lure them out.

Tuesday

In the world created after the Purge of Polaris, she suddenly appears at the same time as the arrival of the new invaders. She first confronts the Protagonist and his party at the top of the Sky Tower with JP's helicopter, apprehending Denebola's core. Having heard about them from Makoto, she takes the protagonist and his party to JP's base and introduces herself as the bureau chief of JP's. When Io was about to introduce herself, Miyako interjects that JP's have already looked into their background with their resources so that introductions will not be necessary.

The party then reveals everything about what happened in the previous world, and surprisingly Miyako believes them. When asked about Yamato, Miyako claims that she has never heard of someone with that name and that the name does not exist in the Hotsuin family's history records, but there is a record that refers to Al Saiduq as the one who informs them about the demons. The party asks for her help to look for Yamato, Al Saiduq, and their other friends. Miyako agrees, though she cannot promise anything regarding Yamato and Alcor, and in exchange she asks for their cooperation with JP's to protect the world against the disaster caused by the new invaders, Triangulum.

Wednesday

She enters the Protagonist's room just as he is awake and is shocked when the Protagonist calls her out. She apologizes before informing him that JP's is still searching for his remaining friends. However, she could not find anything about Yamato in the Hotsuin family's history record and even Japan's entire database nor any sign of Saiduq's appearance. Putting aside the search, she asks for him and his friends to be in charge of helping the civilians while JP's will be the one to take care of the Triangulum. They are interrupted by Daichi and Io's arrival, prompting her to leave.

She later calls the Protagonist to inform him of Keita, Jungo, Joe, and Ronaldo's whereabouts. She also informs him of the appearance of the second Triangulum, Spica, and reminds him and his friends to take care of the rampaging demons while JP's will deal with Spica. Hearing the report that the Protagonist and his party defeated Spica against Miyako's order, even though she is grateful for their help, she criticises their disobedience and orders them to stand back the next time a Triangulum appears since the Triangulum is JP's' problem, not civilians like them.

Spica's main body resurfaces and make its way to the Rainbow Bridge, killing the JP's members guarding there in the process. The Protagonist and the party once again disobey Miyako's order and defeats it. Before the Protagonist could deliver the finishing blow, Miyako stops him by destroying the Spica buds herself, entraps Spica's body, and then kills Aramisaki, shocking the whole party. She once again reprimands the party's disobedience as she expected them to obey her order, and warns them not to do anything as they please before leaving.

Suspicious that Miyako is hiding something from them, the party goes to the underground lab beneath the Sky Tower with the code that Fumi managed to get. They are surprised to find an unconscious Al Saiduq trapped within a tube. Miyako finds them and uses the Dragon Stream's power to render them unable to move nor summon their demons. Since they have seen too much, Miyako cannot let them roam free and knocks them unconscious, putting them in jail.

Thursday

Al Saiduq reveals that Miyako imprisoned him as part of her plan to create a new "Administrator", which also includes sacrificing the party's lives. The party presumes that the reason JP's hasn't been after them lately is because Miyako is planning to keep them around until the time for their sacrifice comes. When Arcturus appears, she unexpectedly saves the party by temporarily binding Arcturus and tells them to escape while she holds the Triangulum. According to Makoto, Miyako is wounded after retreating from Arcturus, but fortunately her wounds are not life-threatening.

Recovered from her wounds, Miyako assists in the second battle against Arcturus by once again binding its movements when it was about to kill the party. She also gives part of her Dragon Stream power to Yamato, increasing his power and allowing him to deal damage against Arcturus, eventually defeating it. Before Yamato could kill it, Miyako imprisons Arcturus. She introduces herself to Yamato whom she refers as "Brother", shocking them. However, Yamato claims that he does not have a sister and questions her identity, followed by the party questioning her entire plan. Miyako remains silent to the questions and instead tells them that even if they defeat Arcturus, the Astrolabe will not restart. She tells them that she will explain thoroughly once they return to their respective base.

Back in the base, she contacts the party at Nagoya and explains her plan: she is going to use them and herself as a sacrifice to make Saiduq the rightful Administrator by transferring all of their Administrative Authority to Saiduq, and the Triangulum are necessary to become Saiduq's swords. She also reveals that her existence is not "natural" in the world as once Yamato returns to the world she should not be present any longer and there is a possibility that the Astrolabe cannot restart if she remains. She gives them one night to think it over and give their answer tomorrow.

Friday

If the Protagonist chooses to follow with Miyako's plan, they are all sacrificed and Saiduq officially becomes the true Administrator, watching over the world. However, later the world is once again put on trial and this time is completely engulfed by the Void, reaching the bad ending.

If the Protagonist refuses to go along with her plan, she warns them to be prepared as she now must use force to capture and sacrifice them. Ordering her subordinates to capture the party, they are only successful in capturing Daichi. She visits Daichi at his cell and repeats her earlier statement that there is no other way. Before leaving, she states that she has no qualification to become their friend.

At the promised time, beneath the Sky Tower, she waited for the party to come. She lets Daichi return to their side and once again asks if they will cooperate with her plan. With the party once again refusing, Miyako intends to force them with the power of the Dragon Stream, but this time Yamato blocks her attack with equal power, leading her to attack with the entire JP's members present. The party eventually succeeds in freeing Saiduq. At this time, Miyako uses her last resort to realize her plan. She tells her subordinates to retreat as she reveals her true identity as the fourth Triangulum, Cor Caroli.

Once she is defeated, Saiduq reveals her origin: Miyako is a Triangulum created by Canopus, the control system of Akashic Record that overseeing the law of the universe. When Saiduq and Yamato reset the world for the second time, Yamato stayed in the Akasha Stratum to continuously salvage the Protagonist's deteriorating data, consequently making Yamato's existence disappear. This caused an error in the third world and so Miyako was created to fill that error. Miyako feels that now that her plan has failed and she is starting to doubt her will, she tells the party to kill her. The party refuses and instead asks her to help them defeat Canopus together since she is their friend. Regaining her resolve, she joins the party.

While the party thinks of a way to to destroy the Factors that guard Canopus' system as well as a way to defeat the Administrator itself, Miyako and Saiduq modifies the terminal to take them to where Canopus is. While thinking it through, Shards of Canopus appear and attack the civilians. When the shards attacked Yamato and Miyako immediately defended him, their Dragon Stream powers react and completely destroyed the invaders. Fumi summarises that since Miyako and Yamato are existing together, even though Miyako was supposed to no longer exist in the third world due to Yamato's return, this causes an irregularity that cannot be comprehended by Canopus' system, thus allowing Miyako and Yamato's combined power to permanently destroy the invaders.

Finally having found a way to defeat Canopus, all that is left is thinking about what to do with the world after Canopus is defeated.

Last Day

In the Eternal Battle Ending, Miyako and Saiduq reset the world back to its previous state as the Protagonist and his friends continue to fight against another invader.

In the Human Administrator Ending, Miyako suggests to the Protagonist to keep his plan to become the Administrator a secret from the others to avoid making them sad, though Yamato easily saw through this. Miyako then makes the Protagonist the new Administrator of the Akashic Record. She intended to accompany the Protagonist in his solitude as his sword so he will not be lonely while watching over the world. However, Saiduq pushes her away at the last second as he states that she is a human and he alone is enough to become the Protagonist's sword, shocking her as she, with Yamato and Daichi, watches the Protagonist and Saiduq disappear.

In the Break Record Ending, Miyako and Saiduq create a new world without the Akashic Record so the world will be completely freed from any invader. She reveals since she and Saiduq are part of the Administrator System, they will disappear as well and bid their friends farewell. Before creating the new world, Yamato acknowledges her as an excellent human being, telling her that she should not be ashamed as the head of the Hotsuin clan, which Miyako is grateful for. In the new world, Miyako this time is truly reborn as a human. When the Protagonist, Io, and Daichi are about to enter the car, Miyako bumps into Io. Recognizing her, Io pushed Miyako into the car with them and is last seen along with the entire party gathering at a beach where Saiduq is surfing.

Fate System

At Fate 1 she gains Ice and Fire resistance, at Fate 3 she unlocks Divine Sandalphon, and at Fate 5 she unlocks Snake Kohryu, though the game erroneously reports that she unlocks Tyrant Lucifer.

Miyako's Fate System focuses on her thoughts about the meaning of her existence. Throughout Miyako's Fate System, Miyako is struggling with her fear and doubt that her emotions, her desire, and everything she has is merely a fake since she is only a creation made by Canopus to fix the error in the world. She feels that she has no heart since she is a Triangulum and has no right to stay in the world. Spending times with the Protagonist and his friends furthered her insecurities as she became afraid to lose them. This worry is put at peace once the Protagonist pointed out that her fear is the very proof that she has a heart of her own, returning her resolution to fight with them.

Stats

Similar to Io Nitta, Makoto Sako, and her brotherly counterpart, Miyako leans towards the role of the "magic knight", as her stat spread and growth generally favors Magic and Strength over other attributes. Unlike the aforementioned demon tamers, however, Miyako invests in Agility and Vitality slightly more frequently, making her speedier and more rounded while having a little less Strength (albeit enough to make good use of certain cracked skills, such as Fire Amp and Rage Soul).

It should be noted that because of coincidentally similar balanced stats and multiple Fate-granted resistances, parallels can be drawn between Miyako and the Anguished One, although the latter's HP and MP stats significantly outclass her own. Also like Alcor, her balanced stats not only grant her a large number of cracked skills, but the ability to use most of them fairly well. Both Miyako and Yamato also share the same higher-than-usual stat total.

Trivia

  • Miyako was first mentioned in the art book as Yamato's rumoured younger twin sister.
  • Even though she's not truly Yamato's sister, she still refers to him as "Brother" since they shares the same Hotsuin bloodlines.
  • She can channel the Dragon Stream power stronger than Yamato until the latter increased it by removing the stakes at Mt. Fuji, making them possess equal Dragon Stream power.
  • After joining the party, Yamato often refers her as "Vixen" (女狐, Megitsune) due to her sneaky attitude when talking to him.
  • Unlike Al Saiduq, even though she's Canopus' sword, she cannot control the Akashic Record since she's a human/Triangulum hybrid.
  • At the end of her Fate route, Miyako's smile expression changed happier.
  • Like Al Saiduq, she doesn't require demon summoning app to summon demons. Also, when about to fight enemies, she extends her sword instead of cell phones like the other party members.
  • In her initial sketch, she doesn't wear her butterfly-shaped ribbon.
  • According to Shinjiro Takada and Akiko Kotoh in interview, Miyako was actually a character that was decided on during the development of the original version of the game for Nintendo DS, but they decided that she was unnecessary while working out details on the scenario, and decided to omit the character. However, she’s a character they contemplated, so her inclusion began after consulting with the writer on whether she could appear in the Triangulum Arc.[1]
