A mermaid is a mythical aquatic creature with the upper half of a woman and the lower half of a fish. Mermaids appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Africa and Asia. Male mermaids are called "mermen."
Mermaids are sometimes associated with perilous events such as floods, storms, shipwrecks and drownings. Mermaids are regarded as unlucky omens by many fishermen, often foretelling severe storms or poor catches. Legend says they use their voices to charm men, causing them to crash their ships. In other folk traditions, or sometimes within the same tradition, they can be benevolent or beneficent, bestowing boons or falling in love with humans.
Mermaids are associated with the mythological Greek sirens as well.
