Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei is a game for the MSX series of computers, later ported to similar machines. Developed by Telenet, it is also the very first game in the entire Megami Tensei franchise; however, though it is based on the same source, it has no other ties to the later games developed by Atlus.

The PC-88 and Sharp X1 version is essentially a remake of the original simpler MSX game. It is unclear what the FM-7 version is like, but it is likely based on the PC-88/X1 version.

Gameplay is mostly based on the arcade game Gauntlet. The game is presented from a top-down perspective and the player attacks enemies primarily by throwing their sword.

The player is tasked with traveling through the Makai, which is divided between eleven worlds themed after the Sephirot. Each of the worlds contains eight floors, though they are not always arranged in ascending order. Each world, other than the starting world Malkuth and the center world Da'at, is further divided into "good" and "evil" versions, for a total of 160 floors.

The game is also the first appearence of the Moon Phase System in the series. At the Full Moon certain enemies may use a more powerful attack, and some of the player's items are more potent.
