History[]
Maui is the folk hero of various Polynesian mythology. Maui has been depicted in various forms such as an ordinary human or fully divine. However, his most common incarnation is that of a demigod, usually from a goddess mother and a human father.
Appearing in various Polynesian mythologies, Maui has performed the same feats in most of their lores. He is said to wield a magic fishhook which is said to be able to fish and reel in any sea creature with the greatest of ease. However, the hook itself has been used mainly to raise the respective archipelagos and to capture the sun and slow down its flight. He is also the deity that discovers the secret of creating fire and shares the knowledge with humanity.
The Hawaiian island of Maui was not named directly after the demigod Maui. Rather, the original Polynesian discoverer Hawai'iloa named the island after his eldest son, Maui, who was named after the demigod.
