Mandrin is a Persona in Persona 5: The Phantom X.
History[]
Louis Mandrin was a French smuggler from Dauphiné. He has been known as the Robin Hood of France, due to him rebelling against the corrupt French taxers, who at the time levied many an unpopular tax, such as the gabelle salt tax.
This rebellion had started when he was a 23-year-old young man, where, in 1748, under contract he crossed the Alps with "100 mules minus three" to assist the French army in Italy, but the trip was so perilous, only 17 mules made it, and the trip had left so much of a toll on the surviving mules, the tax collectors withheld pay. Five years after that, Mandrin and his friend Benoît Brissaud were involved in a fatal brawl that saw their opponents killed, with Benoît being sentenced to a hanging while Mandrin being sentenced to work in a galley, a ship that relied on manpowered rowing. While Mandrin escaped, his friend could not, but worse for Mandrin, one of his 8 younger brothers (soon to be 7) Pierre was hanged under a counterfeiting charge, driving forth his urge to get back at the French taxers.
He joined a smuggler ring, and soon became capable enough to lead it with military precision, where he first bought goods from Switzerland then went to French towns without spending a livre on taxes, which gained him support from the populous, and grew into a thorn into the Ferme générale (the tax collectors of the French royal crown)'s side, where he carried out his campaigns, eventually making his Ferme générale buyers buy his goods at gunpoint.
His luck ran out when Ferme générale enlisted the Royal French Army to invade Savoy, a sovereign nation at the time, to arrest him, which was compounded when two of Mandrin's men ratted him out. When captured, the King of Savoy was not happy with the French intrusion and demanded King Louis VX that Mandrin be turned over to him. While the French King was in agreement, the Ferme générale wasn't, and sped Mandrin through court before the King's word reached them. Mandrin was then executed in 1755 upon the breaking wheel before a crowd of sympathizers. Despite the barbaric breaking of his body, he didn't so much as made a cry, and was strangled to put him out of his suffering.
