Manananggal is a demon in the series.

Appearances[]

History[]

Manananggal is a mythical creature in the Philippines, described and usually depicted as a hideous female monster with a long proboscis-like tongue who has ability to sever her upper torso and sprout bat-like wings which she uses for flight; she may appears as a normal woman during the day. Her name means "remover." She is said to love preying on pregnant women, sucking fetuses within the pregnant woman in her sleep using her tongue. To kill a Manananggal, one must find the lower torso of the monster which is hidden in a safe location and put salt or garlic on it. This will stop her from rejoining with her torso and killing her as the sun burns her monstrous body. Manananggal can be mentioned to scare small children in the Philippines.

She is similar to the Malay Penanggal, even in the etymology, as both of these body-severing monsters' name comes from the word "tanggal," which usually means "to remove."

Profile[]

Shin Megami Tensei V[]

"A witch whose lore originated in the Philippines.
It masquerades as a beautiful woman during the day but transforms into a blood-sucking monster at night. It has the ability to separate its upper and lower body, and can sprout bat wings from its back to fly in search of humans to suck their blood. It is said that the Manananggal preys on unborn fetuses in particular, using its proboscis-like tongue to open the wombs of pregnant women, wherein it will suck the fetus' blood, or devour it outright."
Shin Megami Tensei V lore

During a raid on Jouin High School, a Manananggal chases after a Jack Frost, prompting the demon to request the protagonist for help. She attacks them but is ultimately killed. Another Manananggal ambushes them with a Shiki-Ouji but both are also slain by them in the ensuing battle.

Manananggal has a signature skill, Sanguine Drain, an Almighty attack that drains HP and MP from the selected target.

If Manananggal is in the protagonist's party, she may speak to an enemy Loup-garou, having heard of his origins and tells him to embrace and appreciate the remaining beauty he has left. Loup-garou will give her an item for her kind words and leave.

Trivia[]

  • In an interview with Masayuki Doi, Manananggal was a demon he strongly pushed to include when the staff was selecting demons in the early stages of the game. That is because all other demons were selected to fulfill a certain genre or role, and while considering what modern Shin Megami Tensei fans would like to see in terms of design, they decided they wanted to mix in more "extreme, experimental" roles as well, with Manananggal being "the horror character."
