Makarakarn (マカラカーン, Makarakaan)? is a Support skill.
Effect[]
In the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, Makarakarn creates a barrier on all allies that lasts for a single turn, which protects them from magical attacks, subsequently reflects them back to the attacker, and costs the attacker all of their Press Turn icons in games that use the Press Turn system. Generally, the user's related attack and defense stats are calculated in the process, and buffs, such as Makakaja or Concentrate, are also put into consideration. In terms of enemy AI behavior, they are generally unaware of the shields cast onto the player party members when they attack.
In Shin Megami Tensei V, Makarakarn protects one ally, and specifically grants a repelling resistance to skills with the Magic affinity: strength-based Magic attacks are reflected by this shield. The shield overrides the user's stronger affinities, such as Drain. Additionally, the shield's reflection ignores the attacker's resistances and any shields and pierces through. Makarakarn cannot protect against Piercing attacks. Makarakarn cannot stack with other shields, such as Tetrakarn and Elec Block, and will override them if used. Attackers cannot miss or land Critical hits on either the shielded targets, nor the attacker it's repelled towards, even with the effects of Omagatoki: Critical. Attacks with secondary effects, such as debuffs or ailments, are sent back at the attacker as well. Draining attacks are converted into regular damage-dealing attacks. Multi-hit skills directed towards the target with the shield will always hit once, skipping any other attacks that were directed towards them.
In Soul Hackers 2, Makarakarn protects all allies from non-Almighty Magic attacks. The shields protect from one hit each for one turn. Affinities and other shields are accounted during the repelling process: if an attack is repelled twice, the attack is stopped and will not deal damage.
In the Persona series, Makarakarn erects a barrier on 1 ally, which protects them from 1 magical attack, and subsequently reflects it back to the attacker.
In Persona 5, the shield lasts until it is activated by an appropriate attack or until it is removed with Makara Break. The shield also reflects ailments and instant death skills. The shield takes priority over any accuracy checks, and will always activate: the reflected attack will never miss. Secondary effects, such as the Burn condition of Fire attacks, can be afflicted back at the attacker. If an attack is reflected back at the user when they have a shield, the attack will be blocked instead. Tetrakarn and Makarakarn can stack. If a combatant with an ailment has their attack reflected back at them, they cannot deal themselves Technical damage nor be Downed, but in Royal, if that ailment can be removed when hit, the attack will remove the ailment.
In Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Makarakarn protects the entire party from one magical attack each, and reflects it back at the attacker, for one round.
Regardless of series, Makarakarn usually does not provide protection from Almighty Skills.
