Longma, also known as Ryuume in Japan, is a demon and Persona in the series.

History

Longma or Bai Longma (White Dragon Horse) is the third son of the Dragon King of the West who possesses shapeshifting powers. In the novel Journey to the West, he committed capital crime by incinerating Jade Emperor's jewel but was pardoned from the death sentence after Guan Yin's mediation. In order to redeem his undoing, he is ordered to rendezvous with Xuanzang and assist him when he crosses the mountain on his way to India. However, he accidentally swallowed Xuanzang's mount, Guan Yin then suggests that he shapeshifts into a white horse to serve as Xuanzang's steed. Longma keeps his identity a secret from his traveling companions for most of the story and is Xuanzang's longest disciple and witness.
