Apps and SubApps are an integral part of the gameplay in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey and Strange Journey Redux.

Apps[]
Apps are the main software programs of the Demonica armor, responsible for the suit's visor and navigational capabilities. They can be researched or upgraded with Rare Forma, and are automatically awarded to the Protagonist after taking the Rare Forma piece to the Red Sprite's laboratories. Some Apps require more than one Rare Forma piece to be fully researched and used to augment the Demonica's capabilities. They are all used at the same time and are fully stackable with each other.
SubApps[]
SubApps are secondary programs intended to improve the performance of the Demonica, its user, his demons, and his interactions with the Schwartzwelt and other demons. They can be researched with Rare Forma, but unlike Main Apps, as soon as a Rare Forma piece capable of generating a SubApp has been analyzed, Irving will put up the resulting SubApp for sale at the lab's shop. After it has been paid for, the SubApp will be included in the Demonica's systems.
They also differ from Main Apps in that the Demonica can only use a limited amount of SubApps at a given time; every SubApp has a certain size, and the suit has a maximum capability of ten spaces. The 7-Card Hand SubApp, however, changes the Demonica's maximum capability to seven spaces, but reduces the size of all SubApps to one. This means the Demonica can use any seven SubApps, regardless of size, but necessarily including the 7-Card Hand SubApp. In Strange Journey Redux, an unlimited number of (non-conflicting) SubApps can be equipped at any time.
