The term protagonist (主人公, Shujinkou)^? describes several characters across the Megami Tensei franchise that a player usually uses as a primary character.

For the most part, protagonists are silent when controlled by the player but tend to gain speaking roles once they're not acting as a protagonist anymore or in non-RPG spin-offs. The major exceptions to this are the Majin Tensei and Devil Children series, in which their protagonists all have regular speaking roles even when controlled by the player. The other exceptions are: Itsuki Aoi from Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE, Ringo from Soul Hackers 2, the protagonist from Metaphor ReFantazio, and Vincent Brooks from Catherine.

Protagonists of "special episodes," such as Seraph at the end of Digital Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2, Tatsuya Suou in his scenario of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment or Aigis from Persona 3 FES: The Answer, a few protagonists that didn't originate in a video game such as Akemi Nakajima and Shin Kanzato, and the playable characters in Soul Hackers' Vision Quest, are also not silent, as they aren't counted as actual protagonists for the player to see as their avatar.
