Leon Strohl da Haliaetus | Party |
"Thank you, <Protagonist>. "Hope is only a step behind a clear conscience." My parents' mantra has never been more clear to me. You keep moving forward. Do what you know to be just. And I will be just a step behind, no matter what. Look back, and you will find hope. Don't forget that."
Leon Strohl da Haliaetus, known also as simply Strohl, is a major playable character in Metaphor: ReFantazio.[1] He is of the populous clemar tribe and the son of the Count of Halia, a noble. He enrolls in the State Army and meets the protagonist at the recruitment center.
Strohl has complicated circumstances as it's rare for a noble to enlist in the army. He seems to hate "Humans," the monsters of Metaphor: ReFantazio. Apparently, his hometown has been ruined.[2]
Personality[]
Strohl is intelligent with a strong sense of justice, and he treats everyone equally, even so that he doesn't let his noble title influence his views and even conceals it.
That being said, he has a sharp tongue as not only can he be witty, but is sly when push comes to shove. He also has a brutally sarcastic side when it comes to dealing with arrogant folk and standing up for others, which makes him come off as arrogant to others. Sometimes he bites more than he can chew, such as when he criticized the deceased Hythlodaeus V's idealism, admitting that "his mouth tends to get ahead of his thoughts."
His emotions, too, get the better of him, such as when he confronts Louis Guiabern about his hand in the human's attack on Halia. According to Strohl, he can't help but feel angry when he thinks about the memory of the village's demise.

Profile[]
"I... I'm Leon Strohl. Just a fallen noble from the countryside. Back there, Klinger mentioned a village that was razed by a human. They sent for help, but he abandoned them. Halia was its name. I'm the son of its lord. And now I know what really happened. We sent our fastest riders, but... we were doomed from the start. If Louis was behind it... then that's all I need to know. He's the one who'll answer for it."
Strohl was born to a noble family overseeing the village of Halia. Seven years prior to the events of the game, on June 1st, Halia would be burned to the ground during a human attack: it would be the first village to be attacked by humans. While they requested backup, no solider ever arrived (Captain Klinger had secretly withheld reinforcements on Louis Guiabern's orders). Strohl's parents died while trying to evacuate citizens. This experience left Strohl with animosity with humans.
Prologue[]
Leon Strohl first applies for a position as a soldier: though Captain Klinger mocks him for his noble status, Strohl responds with sarcasm to his ignorance.
He first meets the protagonist at a recruitment shed while enrolling for the State Army, standing up for him against a prejudiced roussainte who wants to cut in line for a magic igniter, insisting he has "priority." Strohl, however, insists race doesn't matter and demands the man apologizes to them, only for the captain to interrupt their fight and force the roussainte man to back down.
Eventually, after reaching the Northern Border Fort, a human would cause the deaths of many soldiers, prompting Strohl to seek survivors and join the protagonist and Gallica on their infiltration. Strohl, having decided to risk his life for his righteousness as a noble, upon battling the human, a Homo Gorleo, would sacrifice himself so the protagonist is spared. Strohl however survives due to the protagonist awakening his Archetype, the Seeker, and later volunteers to join Grius's mission after learning of Louis Guiabern's origins.
After discovering Captain Klinger is responsible for the deaths of the soldiers by using them as bait, Strohl is especially shaken by the discovery that Klinger refused to do anything to protect his home village, triggering his awakening to his Archetype, the Warrior. After realizing Louis is responsible for it due to Klinger's zealotry towards him, this gives him an incentive to officially join their cause to assassinate Louis.
