Gao Changgong, also known as the Prince of Lanling and the God of War, was a high-ranking general of the Northern Qi dynasty who was given a fiefdom in Lanling County, southern Shandong. He reportedly wore a fearsome mask to hide his beautiful face.
His most famous battle was the rescue of the siege of Jinyong in 564 A.D., where a 100,000-man army of Northern Zhou attacked the city. Gao Changgong fought his way to the gates of the city with only 500 cavalrymen. The gates were opened for him by the soldiers of Jinyong, and the army of Northern Zhou was defeated soon after. To celebrate the victory, the soldiers composed the famous song and dance "The song of the Prince of Lanling entering the battle camp." It is now long lost in China, though it was introduced into Japan during the Tang Dynasty with Lanling now known as Ranryōō.
