Originally called Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi, it was the sword obtained from Yamata-no-Orochi's corpse after Susano-o slayed it with a Totsuka-no-Tsurugi after the Yamata no Orochi fell into a drunken stupor from potent sake. During the process of chopping up the beast, Susano-o's blade Ame-no-Habakiri broke when he went to one of the Orochi's tails. Curious, he used the stub of his broken blade to excavate the tail in question, and from it, came this sword. The sword was then given to his sibling Amaterasu as atonement for his previous actions which had caused him to be banished, and was made into one of the Three Sacred Treasures.
A later legend is the source of the name "Kusanagi." When Yamato-Takeru was unofficially banished by his father, Emperor Keiko, who had feared his son, he was gifted the Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi by his aunt Yamatohime-no-Mikoto, along with some fire strikers. When he was trapped by fire by the actions of a treacherous warlord, he desperately cut the burning grass in an bid to escape, but by doing so, he discovered the ability to manipulate the wind and have it follow his sword's swings. Using both the blade and the fire strikers, he was able to turn the fire against his would-be killers. Yamato Takeru then renamed the Ame-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi into the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, meaning "Grass-cutting sword", commemorate his harrowing victory.
