"Is that true? His Highness... is still... (...) You mean... if that's true, then I..."
"O lodestar who wanders in solemn duty. O thou anguished traveler... Thy long-stagnant stance hath finally been broken. Now choose thy path."
"Hear now my new calling, transcending all oaths! I choose life of my own will!"
"Thank you. Thou hast chosen a noble parting. Henceforth, thy fears and insecurities become thy light. Thou art the brilliant star that shall illuminate the king's road. Now... Awaken."
"My name is Eiselin Burchelli Meijal Hulkenberg! I am knight, I am commander... and last of the honor guard! Once more, I take up arms in my liege's name! Alces... I will see you freed."
Knight is an Archetype in Metaphor: ReFantazio.
History[]
"In time's of yore, there lived heroes, who swore an abiding oath of loyalty and protection. their souls together formed the power of the Knight. Among them, the Adept sentinel of both steel and magic, I dub the Magic Knight, and the Elite selfless paragon of grace, I dub the Paladin. Per its name, the Knight Archetype is an unparalleled protector. But it is said that another Elite form, the knight's shadow, is also known to exist. Yet in times of Conflict, there are battle that cannot be solved by shield alone, and those of blade and spell must bear that burden. Let no Knight forget this truth."
Profile[]
"The Origin Knight Archetype. Specializing in protection, the knight increases its defense while drawing the enemy's attacks, though their true power lies in teamwork. The knight won't deal much damage on their own, but learns strategic Synthesis Skills that create defensive barriers and make enemies weak to certain affinities."
Knight is the fifth Archetype to appear in the game, awakening within Eiselin Burchelli Meijal Hulkenberg from the news that the prince still yet lives from the party after the necromancer reanimated the slain body of Arvid "Grius" Alces to attack the party as they tried to make their way into the Regalith Grand Cathedral through the mausoleum to stop said necromancer. Progression with the Knight lineage is maintained with the protagonist's bond with Hulkenberg, with said bond also allowing his party to access the Archetype for themselves as well.
Strategically, the Knight is a stone wall, specializing almost entirely on defense, only gaining an offensive move upon mastery, forcing the user to attack with their weapons while ranking up, though between the high bonus to Endurance and an aggro-drawing skill, Knight's Proclamation, the Knight does allow teammates in more frailer Archetypes a chance to avoid damage, though a Healer is needed to prevent a Knight from getting killed from drawing too much aggro. Additionally, the Knight has the additional utility of restricting the enemy's skillpool, causing them to resort either to melee attacks, generally 1 Slash/Pierce/Strike attack, or both. This can give the Knight a tactical edge as they can resist some of the attacks with their Pierce resistance while potentially guaranteeing their weaknesses are safe.
That being said, the effects of Knight's Proclamation aren't guaranteed to work the same with every enemy, as while it can lock most of an enemy's skills, some enemy skills are unlocked specifically by casting Knight's Proclamation; the first instances that react this way are the Morneto in Regalith Grand Cathedral, who instead inflict themselves with Rage. Additionally, some enemies, generally bosses, outright ignore the effects of Knight's Proclamation by preventing a skill lock and are only drawn in by single-target attacks, debilitating the Knight's primary role.
Because of their turtling tactics, Knights rely on either the attack power of others while it draws in enemy attacks, Skill Inheritance for giving a Knight utility or making use of Synthesis Skills, requiring a competent team composition to make best use of the Knight's strengths.
In terms of unlocking other allies' Synthesis skills, the Knight lineage is categorized as a support combatant (alongisde Healer and Commander), as well as a leader (alongside Seeker and again Commander.) Generally, rotating between Knight and Commander will preserve the same set of skills for other teammates as the two Archetypes are tightly-knit in their role as supporters.
