Kiyotada Sumaru, also known as Gozen, is an antagonist in Persona 2: Eternal Punishment. He is a bogus historical war tyrant fabricated by Nyarlathotep to further his plans.
History[]
According to the rumor that manifested him, Kiyotada Sumaru is the mythical ruler of the land that would eventually inherit his name and become Sumaru City, which he lorded over in the Period of Warring States. A brutal, despotic warlord, his tyranny was such that an assassination attempt was organized against him by one of his vassals, Tatsunoshin Suou, Suou's lover Maihime Amano and Suou's retainer Junnosuke Kuroda.
Between the three of them, they were able to incapacitate Sumaru, but Amano died when the tyrant managed to gore her with a spear. Devastated by the death, Suou ordered Kuroda to flee Sumaru Castle and burn it down as he fled.

Profile[]
During the events of Eternal Punishment, Sumaru's head was found in the ruins of Sumaru Castle in Honmaru Park. He was given a semblance of life by Nyarlathotep's power and made the centerpiece of the New World Order, communicating with the other members by telepathy and instructing them to fulfill and spread an apocalyptic event so they would attain paradise. With the unsealing of the Monado Mandala, Sumaru Castle was mystically rebuilt.
When Tatsuzou Sudou fights the party atop the Ameno Torifune, the kotodama of Gozen turns him into a monster known as the Detested Hunter. Once it's defeated, the head resurrected and turned into a turtle-like monster to fight the party, but was defeated. With Gozen's defeat the Ameno-Torifune was thrown into the Monado Mandala where Nyarlathotep is properly confronted and fought.
It's implied that the entire legend of his death was fabricated and spread as both a weapon and another of Nyarlathotep's taunts to Tatsuya Suou about the events of the Other Side. With Nyarlathotep no longer directly interfering with humanity and the curse that causes rumors to come to life lifted from Sumaru at the end of Eternal Punishment, it's likely that Gozen ceased to exist alongside it.
Stats[]
- If the Fusion Spell Tenchu-Satsu (used by Maihime Amano, Junnosuke Kuroda and Tatsunoshin Suou) is used on Gozen, the attack will ignore all boss resistances and kill him immediately.
