Profile[]

Persona 5: The Phantom X[]

Kira is a 25-year-old resident doctor working at a local hospital in Tokyo. He is keen on studying various disease cases, but also like playing pranks with eyeball toys.

He seems to have a hidden reason for becoming a doctor, and hopes to change the current world where most people are gradually losing their desires to live.[1]

Kira is skilled at playing shooting games and often plays at the arcade center in Shibuya, which is where the protagonist meets him. When he focuses on his playing, he becomes verbally arrogant and aggressive. He asks the protagonist to play a round with him after seeing how he played. After getting familiar with each other, Kira reveals that he is privately conducting an experiment through playing shooting games to observe people's reactions under adverse situations, and find the solution to help people regain their desires to live. He asks the protagonist to assist him through having conversations, as he can sense a strong desire of life from the protagonist. The protagonist agrees and asks to learn Kira's shooting skills in return.

Within the Synergy Stories, the protagonist learns that Kira wants to perform an operation on a patient, who initially is hesitant. Upon convincing the patient to go through with it, Kira is paid a visit by his mentor Tokuya Furukawa who is egotistical and selfish and unwilling to take the risks at the hospital because he is regarding Kira merely as an unprofessional freshman and prioritizing his own career over the patients. Tokuya firmly rejected Kira because he believes if Kira's operation were to go badly, would think his own reputation would be damaged so he attempts to force Kira to call it off even after the patient accepts, which results in the protagonist going off to change Tokuya's heart. After the change of heart, Tokuya allows Kira to start the surgery. After the surgery, Tokuya had finally recognized Kira's ability and apologized to both him and the protagonist for the way he acted, explaining he was just jealous of Kira's talent for medical methods while Kira was surprise of his supervisor’s change of attitude.

Etymology[]

  • Kira (基良) consists of the kanji for "base/foundation" (基) (ki) and "good/virtuous" (良) (ra).
    • The kanji (基) (ki) is also a homophone for a variety of kanji that all collectively translates to various meanings of "to cut/attack," which is referenced through his job as an intern doctor practicing surgery, his weapon of choice and his Persona Harpyia specializing in slash-based Physical Skills.
  • Kitazato (北里) consists of the kanji for "north" (北) (kita) and "village/hometown" (里) (sato/zato).
