Kayama is Karukozaka High School's nurse. Kayama was the only person in Ideo Hazama's life who he felt cared and would listen to him. This made Hazama develop feelings for her and even confess, only to be gently turned down as Kayama tells Hazama that since she's a member of the school faculty she cannot be personally involved with a student. Despite that, Hazama genuinely cares for Kayama as she's the only character in the game to always be present at the school, even after unlocking the final dungeon when all other teachers and students disappear.

Kayama can be found in the school infirmary, on the first floor of the school. At the beginning of the game she'll give the protagonist five Medicines and tell them to take care. Kayama provides free healing at any time, but only for the protagonist and their partner. In order to heal any demon party member the player must rely on the healing fountains inside of dungeons, which cost money.

In Yumi and Reiko's routes, Kayama safely returns to the human world with the rest of the school. In Charlie and Akira's routes she remains trapped in the Expanse forever.

Etymology

• The surname Kayama means "fragrance, fragrant" (香) (ka) and "mountain, hill" (山) (yama).

• Kayama is based on the Japanese psychiatrist Rika Kayama.
