Kashin Koji, also known as Shippo Gyoja (Pilgrim of the Seven Treasures), was purportedly an illusionist born in the Muromachi Period. Growing up on Mount Koya, he studied Buddhism but was exiled after his focus shifted to magic. Afterwards, he became a vagabond who performed magic shows for people while also scamming those of very high rank.
Kashin had in his possession a hell scroll, which would move on its own. Oda Nobunaga wished to have the scroll for his own and, after making an attempt on Kashin's life, bought the scroll. However, the scroll no longer moved, as its magic had been lost. Kashin claimed this was because the scroll was a priceless item, and was now only worth what had been paid for it.
By 1582, Kashin was arrested for vagrancy, though he was allowed out to entertain a dinner party for Akechi Mitsuhide. Kashin managed to escape, using his magic on a folding screen depicting a lake with a boat. He caused the water to flood into the party, and escaped using the boat.
