History[]
Iwate is a figure of legend originating from Kurozuka in Nihonmatsu, Fukushima Prefecture. A traveling man searching for a place to spend the night comes upon a cave. The elderly woman living there allows him to stay, on the condition that he not look in her room. After he discovers human remains and flees, Iwate reveals herself to be a demon.
Before this, Iwate served as a nurse to an aristocratic estate in the capital. The princess whom she doted on had an incurable illness since birth. Wanting to save her, Iwate went to a fortune-teller who told her she needed the liver from a pregnant woman's unborn child. Iwate left her newborn daughter to go on a journey. After years and months of waiting, a young couple requested lodging in the cave Iwate was staying in. When the wife went into labor and the husband left to get medicine, Iwate sliced open the woman's belly and ripped out the baby's liver. Just then, Iwate spotted a protective charm on the woman—the same one she gave to her daughter before leaving the capital. Overwhelmed that she had mistakenly killed her own daughter, Iwate became unhinged, turning into a demon that consumes human flesh.
