Items (アイテム, Aitemu)? are a root mechanic in the Megami Tensei series and are commonplace in roleplaying games.

Overview[]

Generally, items can be used in combat as alternatives to skills, and take up a turn. Some items may even directly imitate the effects of skills.

Unlike skills they do not require HP or MP/SP to be depleted for use, however they're divided in quantities, and only several can be used depending on how many have been stocked up in advance. Additionally, items in general may have an inventory limit (one common number is 99 per item.) In the Shin Megami Tensei series, some items may have specific stock limit, such as with some only permitting 10 to be carried at a time.

Items have many means of acquisition, with the most common way being bought through shops. In some games, such as the Persona 5 series, shops may hold a stock limit on how many of the same item can be bought at a time, and when the stock will replenish according to the calendar.

Types of Items[]

Consumable Items are the most common type of items in the series.

Key Items are plot-related items that are necessary to progressing the story. They cannot be used in combat.
