Iblis is a demon in the series.

History[edit | edit source]

Iblis, alternatively known as Eblis, Ibris or Azazil, is a satanic figure frequently occurring in the Quran, commonly in relation to the creation of Adam and the command to prostrate himself before him. After he refused, he was cast out of heaven. For this reason he is seen as an equivalent to the Devil.

In Islamic tradition, Iblis is often identified with ash-Shaitan ("the Devil"), often known by the epithet ar-Rajīm (the Accursed). However, while Shaitan is used exclusively for an evil force, Iblis himself holds a more ambivalent role in Islamic traditions. For many classical scholars, he was an Angel, but is regarded as a Jinn in most contemporary scholarship. He known as an entity made of flame whom, compared to others of his kind, was incredibly pious and praised God to his full extent, which gave him a place in heaven with the angels.

When God made Adam, he commanded his angels to bow to his greatest creation, yet Iblis refused, stating that he is better than him as he was created from fire, and him from clay. God had replied by expelling him from Heaven due to his arrogance and being called the meanest of creatures. Thus, Iblis was thrown out from heaven, cursed by God till the day of judgement, and Iblis asked for "respite" till the day the dead are raised, which God granted him respite till the day, which Iblis said that God put him in the wrong and by His power, Iblis shall lead them all astray, throwing man off "the straight path" till the end, and God stated that if any humans follow Iblis, they shall be thrown into Jahannam (the Islamic Hell) with Iblis, seven gates for the type of sin the humans have committed.

As an angel, Iblis is described as an Archangel, the leader and teacher of the other angels, and a keeper of heaven. At the same time, he was the closest to the Throne of God. God gave him authority over the lower heavens and the earth. Iblis is also considered as the leader of those angels who battled the earthly jinn. On the other hand, Iblis is commonly placed as one of the jinn, who lived on earth during the battle of the angels. When the angels took prisoners, Iblis was one of them and carried to heaven. Since he, unlike the other jinn, was pious, the angels were impressed by his nobility and Iblis was allowed to join the company of angels and elevated to their rank.

Although Iblis is often compared to the devil in Christian theology, Islam rejects the idea that there is an opponent of God and the implied struggle between God and the devil. Iblis might either be regarded as the most monotheist or the greatest sinner, but remains only a creature of God. Iblis did not become an unbeliever due to his disobedience, but because of attributing injustice to God; that is, by asserting that the command to prostrate themselves before Adam was inappropriate. There is no sign of angelic revolt in the Quran but it is said that Iblis's sin could be forgiven at anytime by God. As a mere creature, Iblis cannot be the cause or creator of evil in the world; in his function as Satan, he is merely seen as a tempter who takes advantage of humanity's weakness and self-centeredness and leads them away from God's path. In some Islamic exegesis, comparable to Satan in the Old Testament, Iblis was sent to judge the demons and execute their punishment, but only before humanity was created.
