Grendel is one of three antagonists, along with his mother and the dragon, in the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf (AD 700–1000). Grendel is usually taken to be some kind of monster, though this is the subject of scholarly debate. In the poem, Grendel is feared by all but Beowulf.
Grendel and his mother are described as descendants of the Biblical Cain. Beowulf leaves Geatland in order to find and destroy Grendel, who has been attacking Heorot court, killing and eating anyone he finds there. After a long battle, Beowulf mortally wounds Grendel by ripping his arm off. Grendel dies in his cave under the swamp. Beowulf later engages in a fierce battle with Grendel's mother, over whom he triumphs. Following her death, Beowulf finds Grendel's corpse and removes the head, which he keeps as a trophy.

A Grendel was one of the victims of Jack's Squad experiments and was freed alongside the others. He had no intention of thanking them for saving them since their kind are the ones who did it, and takes the other survivors with him to Sector Grus. A barrier is placed that prevents the protagonist from proceeding forward, and Grendel gives him the option of killing Jack's Squad and in exchange he would remove it. The protagonist can also choose to kill him, leading to the barrier dissipating upon Grendel's defeat.

Grendel has set a Domain over the Jujo Base north of Ikebukuro. Defeating him earns the relic SDF Equipment, which is needed for the Challenge QuestHeavy Weapon Recovery. He later appears as a regular enemy in Camp Ichigaya. Grendel can teach Flynn the Mortal Jihad and Charge skills through his Demon Whisper.

Grendel can be found in Ikebukuro. He can teach Nanashi the Mortal Jihad, Head Crush and Purple Smoke skills through his Demon Whisper. He benefits from learning Physical attack skills.
