"You somehow managed to clear that stage. I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool!"
—Morgana, Persona 5
Gambla Goemon, short for Legend of Gambla Goemon, is a Retro Game item.
Effect[]
Gambla Goemon can be played during the protagonist's daily life. The full game is split into 2 chapters, with each requiring a single session to be completed; if a chapter isn't completed, it'll have to be done from the beginning.
- The rules of the game revolve around chance: the protagonist has to pick between "even" and "odd" numbers, and then roll 2 die: the sum of the die is the final number, and it needs to be consistent with the protagonist's aforementioned guess.
- The second chapter follows the same rules, but he gets to get 2 of 3 guesses right: getting the same outcome twice in a row will lead to the respective result immediately. Overall chance of success is still ultimately 50%.
- If cheats are used, any losses will automatically be turned into wins by altering the outcome of the die between odd and even. In the second chapter, the cheat can activate multiple times. This means it's impossible to lose the game while cheats are turned on.
For each completed session of Gambla Goemon, the protagonist will receive 2 notes of Charm, but only 1 if he fails. Upon completing the entire game, he will also receive a Gambling Card, a redeemable item.

First play | Second play onward
Morgana | So, this game is about a notorious thief who fell down into hell... Wait, something showed up ahead... is that a demon? |
The demon's back. Do you want to ask it about the rules?
Demon | So the deceitful thief who ravaged the world has shamelessly entered this infernal domain... I shall show you the true tortures of hell... At least, I would... but it'd be boring to treat the famous Goemon the same as any old person. Instead, we shall use the two dice in my hand for a little game. I call it... odds or evens! |
- | |
Morgana | Hm, it sounds like we just have to beat this demon in a dice game... | -
Demon | First, you'll have to choose between either even or odd. Even means numbers like two, six, or eight, while odd means numbers like three, seven or eleven. After you choose, I will roll the dice. If you guessed correctly, you win. Otherwise, you lose. And that's all there is to it... Do you understand the rules? |
- | |
Protagonist's dialogue options: | >Absolutely. (Move forward) >Not quite. (Repeat lines above)
Demon | Well then... what is your choice, odd or even? Place your bet!
Protagonist's dialogue options: | >Even. >Odd.
Demon | Hm, interesting choice... You will win if the number is [Odd/Even]. Well, let's find out what it will be!
Push X button to stop 2 randomly-generated dice. Final sum must be correspondent with whether the protagonist has chosen even or odd. Press X again to close results screen.
Demon (if [Number 1] =/= [Number 2]) | A [Number 1] and [Number 2]... [Result between Even/Odd]!
Demon (if [Number 1] == [Number 2]) | Two [Ones/Twos/Threes/Fours/Fives/Sixes]... [Result between Even/Odd]!
Morgana (victory) | Nice, you got it right! Great, you won the bet!
Demon (victory) | Nghhh.... What incredible luck. I should have expected nothing less of the famous Goemon...! It's your win. Continue forth...
Morgana (failure) | You got it wrong...
Demon | Gwahaha, how unfortunate. This is your loss! You shall spend all of eternity in these fiery depths!
Morgana (post-victory) | Hey, the demon's gone and the gate opened... It looks like you can move onward now!
Morgana (post-victory, no cheats) | You somehow managed to clear that stage. I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool!
Morgana (post-failure) | What do you think's going to happen to the protagonist now...? Well, victory in this game really comes down to luck. Just accept your defeat honorably. You might not have won... But I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool! |
Second Session[]

First play | Second play onward
Morgana | Is that... a shrine? There's a giant demon guy in red clothes standing over there... | Hm, King Yama is still there. We'll have to play another gambling game. Do you want to go ask the rules again? |
King Yama | So you've come! Wonderful. My name is King Yama. Whatever happens down in this land of torment is my doing. |
- |
Morgana | Do you think he'll want us to play another dice game...? | - |
King Yama | Now then, let's play a game. I'm sure you already know the rules... but do you need to hear them again? | - |
Protagonist's dialogue options: | >There's no need for that. (Skip batch of lines below, including next dialogue options) >That would be lovely. (Move towards batch of lines below, including next dialogue choice)
King Yama | First off, I'll have you choose either odd or even. Even would be numbers like two, six, or eight, while odd would be ones like three, seven or eleven. After that I'll roll the dice. A correct guess is a win, but an incorrect guess is a loss. That's all... Well, do you understand the rules?
Protagonist's dialogue options: | >Absolutely. (Move forward) >Not quite. (Repeat lines above)
King Yama | However, my game is much stricter than that of the prior demon! You will need to win best two out of three to truly succeed! Otherwise, you lose!
King Yama (start of first round) | Now then, this is the first round. Even or odd... Which do you choose? (go straight to dialogue option)
King Yama (start of second round) | Next comes the second round. Even or odd... Which do you choose? (go straight to dialogue option)
King Yama (start of third round) | On to the third and final round. Even or odd... Which do you choose? (go straight to dialogue option)
Protagonist's dialogue options: | >Even. >Odd.
King Yama | So you're going with [Even/Odd]? The pips shall decide your fate. Now then, let us begin!
Push X button to stop 2 randomly-generated dice. Final sum must be correspondent with whether the protagonist has chosen even or odd. Press X again to close results screen.
King Yama (if [Number 1] =/= [Number 2]) | A [Number 1] and a [Number 2]? It's [Result between even/odd]!
King Yama (if [Number 1] == [Number 2]) | Two [ones/twos/threes/fours/fives/sixes]? It's [Result between even/odd]!
Morgana (victory) | Nice, you got it right! (win+1)
Morgana (failure, no cheats) | You got it wrong... (loss-1)
Move round forward by 1. If wins=2, move forward. If round>3, failure 1 If loss=2, failure 2 If wins<2, return to King Yama's Even/Odd question, depending on round.
Morgana (victory) | Great, you won the bet!
King Yama | Hrgh, y-you won!? It seems as though your fate... has not yet come to an end. The would of the living is nothing but suffering... I hope you have the strength to survive it!
King Yama (failure 1) | Now... our three-round battle has come to its conclusion... But it seems like you haven't managed the proper number of wins... You're done for! Just relax as you descend into the infernal pits of hell! Gahahahaha!
King Yama (failure 2) | Well, well, well... We're only midway through, but just look at the state of things...! It seems like you won't be able to manage the proper number of wins... You're done for! Just relax as you descend into the infernal pits of hell! Gahahahaha!
Morgana (post-victory) | All right, you finished the Legend of Gambla Goemon!
Morgana (post-victory, no cheats) | You somehow managed to clear that stage. I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool! All right, let's enjoy this ending!
Morgana (post-failure) | What do you think's going to happen to the protagonist now...? Well, victory in this game really comes down to luck. Just accept your defeat honorably. You might not have won... But I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool! |

First time | Second time onward
Morgana (before a session starts) | By the way, haven't you read that secret technique book? | - |
Morgana | If you get stuck, Goemon will cut through the problem using his specialty cheat... | So, do you want to use the trick? It'll make the game easier. |
>Use the technique. (Response 1) >Play the game normally. (Response 2)
Morgana (Response 1) | I see... I guess I understand how you might be frustrated about not being able to beat the game.
Morgana (Response 2) | Spoken like a true warrior. Good luck!
Morgana (failure, cheats) | Damn... You missed. What, what's that? Goemon's hand is glowing...!
Demon (failure, cheats, chapter 1) | Hrgh! So bright...!
King Yama (failure, cheats, chapter 2) | ...! Such powerful light!
Morgana (failure, cheats) | H-Hey, the pips on the dice changed!
Demon (failure, cheats, chapter 1) | Hm? I thought it was [Result], but I must have misread it... The result is [Odd/Even]. You win. (win+1)
King Yama (failure, cheats, chapter 2) | ...! I thought it was an [Result] number, but I suppose I was wrong. The result is [Odd/Even]. You win. (win+1)
Morgana (failure, cheats) | Just as I'd expect from Goemon. Our opponent hasn't even noticed a thing!
Morgana (Before starting to roll the first time; Session 1) | It seems like the technique is in effect... You can now roll the dice [X] times instead.
Morgana (post-victory, cheats) | It was't really very exciting with that technique... But I love that attitude you had. Persistence is so cool! |
Trivia[]
- Legend of Gambla Goemon came out in 1989.
- There's different dialogue when the opponent reads the pips: if the numbers don't match, they'll list them separately, but if they do, they'll be listed in succession, such as "two ones," "two twos" and so on.
