Frankenstein's monster, also known as Frankenstein's creature, often incorrectly referred to as Frankenstein, is a fictional monster that first appeared in Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus. The monster is a golem or homunculus created via alchemy, while popular incarnations show or describe the monster often being created from freshly deceased cadavers and advances in the study of biochemistry and bio-electrical conduction.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein builds the creature in his laboratory through an ambiguous method based on a scientific principle he discovered. It is described as 8 feet (240 cm) tall and terribly hideous, but emotional. The monster attempts to fit into human society but is shunned, which leads him to seek revenge against Frankenstein.
Frankenstein's monster became iconic in popular culture, and has been featured in various forms of media, including films, television series, merchandise and video games.
