Etymology[]
Yarai (矢来*)? is the Japanese bamboo fence or palisade. In Kyoto, there is a kind of yarai known as "dog fence" (犬矢来, inu yarai)? which is about one meter tall from the ground and commonly erected before the town house. The main purpose is to protect the exterior facade from dog pees (hence its name) as well as establishing the boundary between the house and the street up front. Using this logic, "Kan Yarai" can be interpreted as "fence for repelling gods", which is supported by its Chinese localization which literally translated to "Expelling God(s)" (逐神).
"Kamiya" (神矢*)? simply means "godly arrow(s)."
